I think the orthodontist, with his/her 4 years of college, 4 years of dental
school, and 3 years of ortho school, knows what he/she is doing.

If there is ever any doubt about proposed treatment, seek a second
opinion!
Orthodontics is a rapidly advancing science and art. There are many
changes compared to what was practiced just ten or twelve years ago.
It's impossible to tell over the internet what is really needed in this
case, but a qualified orthodontist could analyze the case and answer
all your questions about possible alternate treatment plans. It may
also help ease your mind to seek a third opinion, too. Just make sure
that these further opinions are issued by fully-qualified orthodontic
specialists who are familiar with modern developments in the field.

I always tease my ortho buddies by saying it is a shame that they have left
dentistry...most who get into ortho are pretty bright people who were at the
top of their dental class...however...a few, due to politics, nepotism, etc,
slip through the cracks.
