weaning off retainer?

It's been half a month since my braces are off, but I still have to wear my
retainer (the plastic kind) during the day. If I take it out for more than 5
hours, I can feel it very tight in the upper back teeth when I put it back
on.

What is the best way to wean off retainer? My othodontist says to wear it
one hour, remove it three hours and gradually increase the three hours...

Is this the best strategy? Would this work better than wearing it as much as
possible (except eating)?

If it's not too painful, I'd wear it as much as possible.
My experience was that the less you wear it, the less comfortable it is
when you do wear it, and vice versa.
Oh, and retainers are forever.  If you stop wearing it in a couple
years, your teeth will shift and become crooked again!  But you don't
have to wear it often.

When doing orthdontic treatment, the easy part is getting the teeth where we
want them -- the difficult part is getting the teeth to stay where we moved
them.  Wear the retainer as much as you can, and discuss this with your
orthodontist.  You might need to have a new retainer if there are problems
with the present one.  Generally, you can expect better long term results if
you continue to wear your retainer as much as you can.
