Occlusal guard recommended

I was at a specialist who told me I don't need a crown on my molar and
she told me I should consider an occlusal guard. She seems excessive
wear on the molars. I am completely unaware that I grind my teeth. In
any case, she said my periodontist can probably do this for me. My
regular dentist didn't say a thing. That makes me wonder if the regular
dentist is remiss. In any case, I have no experience with this, so I
have some questions.

Is this something that has to be made for me or can it be purchased
over-the-counter? What's the price range for this? She says I only need
it on upper or lower and not on both.

I'm not even sure what else to ask.

I did some further research and I see a guard called Doctor's Night
Guard retailing at $25. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Surprised no one has answered you. As you posted, you can get one over the counter
for $25. You have to put it in hot water to soften it, then bite into it and it's
supposed to mold to your teeth somewhat.

My dentist made one for me which involved taking impressions of my teeth and having
it custom fit, and the price was $195. My insurance (Delta Dental) paid half of
that. It's one piece which fits over the upper teeth.

I'm not very happy with it and I don't wear it, because it causes me to salivate
excessively and I find that uncomfortable. It also seems too tight, as if it's
putting pressure on my teeth. It could be that I'd get used to both problems if I
wore it, but maybe we'll never know.  (I would have asked my dentist, but I picked
it up the weekend before moving to another state, so by the time I tried it it was
too late to go back.)

Thanks for answering. My dentist quoted $550. I will look further. I
don't think it's supposed to hurt.
