Can nicotine (like in nicotine gum) alone cause gum recession, or does
only using tobacco products cause it, like cigs and chewing tobacco?
I.e. is it nicotine, or all the other tobacco chemicals?  thanks

That's interesting ... maybe angiogenisis may have some effect?

Nicotine (or tobacco for that purpose) is not a causeof periodontal
disease. The cause is bacterial attack on the periodontal tissues;
smoking just makes things worse by inhibiting the ability of the
tissues to defend themselves.
Although other tobacco chemicals have an effect, nicotine alone is
enough to produce this effect. This link
http://www.dental-smile.com/1998/1-2-1998_5-2.htm has quite good hard
info on smoking and periodontitis. Since the use of nicotine gum will
usually be of limited duration as one gives up the habit, it probably
won't have a significant effect on periodontal health.

Not until you shove that nicotine software up your butt so far it
knocks out a couple of your periodontal-loosened incisors...
