My 12 ye old daughter has an expander with an herbst appliance. Her 1st
expander was on for about 8 months. Now this expander has been on for
about the same amount of time along with the herbst. No real problems
until now. My daughter woke up in alot of pain yesterday complaining it
felt like food was stuck up in the expander. upon examination I noticed
it was no food but her skin on the palat appears to have grown around
the back bar. Appears to be swollen and also very tight. Went to see
ortho at dental school but instructor out of town. This to me seems to
be of urgency. Has anyone heard of this as a side effect and does this
mean this appliance is no longer effective in the future for her. help!

I don't know which dental school you are going to, but ANY dentist should
ALWAYS have a system in place for emergencies that arise!  The school MUST
have more than just 1 instructor!! I would call up and tell them this is an
emergency and that they need to accommodate your daughter immediately.
Actually, not providing emergency coverage could be grounds for a dentist to
have the state dental board initiate disciplinary proceedings.  CALL THEM
BACK!!
