I would be interested in knowing what makes the dentist feel grinding
is responsible for the recession. Back in the dark ages they felt that
"Stillman's clefts" were caused by occlusal trauma such as grinding.
They were a rather characteristic cleft-like defect in the gumline,
usually in the mid-facial surface. I suppose that there are instances
where trauma from bite may contribute to gum recession, but it's down
the list of things I'd consider, and overall Stillman's clefts are a
pretty archaic concept--I haven't heard of them in years.

My step-dad said to buy a mouth guard similar to what a football player
might wear, but personally, I would think something a dentist would make
would be better. My step-dad's just not too thrilled about shelling out a
couple hundred dollars for something like that.

I'd sooner see you get a second opinion. Store-bought nightguards can
do more harm than good.

Well, I just moved and this is my first time visiting this dentist for a
check up. My last dentist also suggested it so I think it'd be a good idea
to check into it.
