Just needed some information. My oral surgeon wants to take 8 teeth out
at once. 3 bad lower back molars, 2 wisdom teeth, 2 decayed upper teeth
and 1 old root canal. I am thinking of doing just a little at a time
and see how it goes. One upper left tooth had a toothache so I am
thinking of getting that one out first. Next the 2 lower right teeth
that are decayed down to the gum line. Those teeth might still be alive
but infection is a problem. Would it a good idea to take those first 3
out at once? The 2 lower and one left upper and then see how it goes
and come back for the others out? I do not expect much post operative
pain from the upper tooth but since the bottom 2 teeth are worn to the
gum line will he have to dig them out and thus bad post op pain? After
the oral surgeon did x-rays he didnt say anything about difficult
extractions. The x-ray showed the 2 teeth pretty clearly, one slanting
to the left a little;the root that is. If I did have those 3 out at
once how long should I take off from work?
Thanks.

Gettin out all teeth at once to my knowledge is not correct. This is
because u should have a soft diet from side that is opposite to site of
extraction for first 24 hrs(precautionary measure). In your case it is i
think it has to be both side.I dont want to or rather i cant prove ur
dentist to be wrong.I think u should consult some other person if u
dont trust ur dentist.

Think of it this way: One surgery, One recovery. You will not be 8x
sore unless you do them one at a time.

As someone else mentioned, might make eating really rough if both
sides extracted on the same day. But a person can exist for a day or
two on Slimfast, Boost, and McMilkshakes. Unless said person is milk
allergic.

How about the 3 teeth out at once? How long off work?

I've once extracted 28 teeth at once. Patient went home with his new
dentures which acted as a bandage.
It's all preference. Going to work the next day is not a problem unless
you just want to take a day off.
Has your sugeon reccomended sedation dentistry? I've heard ads for
doing dentistry while the patient is zonked out. Eight extractions in
one session could take an hour or so. However, it would mean a couple
days of post op discomfort, but at least would be over at once.
If you get a scrip for hydrocodone, please don't get Malankrodt. Malan
somethign or other. The stuff I've found to be useless.

Eider way ..... once I yanked 22 teeth and it was
fine. Another time it was ONE and it was ONE TOO
MANY for that patient!
