OP here. Thanks for your reply.
I understand his school may have textbooks but is it possible to
recommend few reference textbooks? The textbooks that are published
here in the US may not be avaible to them so soon and even if they
might, they would be prohibitively expensive. I'm just trying to help
out. Is it possible to suggest any books?

Sure you can. It's not just cutting and sewing. But of course you're
right--at a certain point, there's no substitute for having that big
cold steel instrument in your hands.
