Hi all,

This may or may not be the right place to ask this question. I'm not
sure but I thought I'd start here and would really appreciate the advice
of anyone who has some reasonably certain answers to my questions.

Since my early teens, I've had epilepsy. Fortunately, I was able to find
an anti-seizure medication that gave me very good control over my
seizures and haven't had very many in the intervening years.

However, I have had some and when I have them, I usually bite my tongue.
This is generally not a big deal and it usually heals rather quickly.
However, recently, I had a series of seizures within a couple of weeks
time and managed to bite my tongue in exactly the same spot every time.
This (unfortunately) left me with about a two inch gaping "slice" on the
right side of my tongue.

Thinking that it would heal on it's own (as it always had before), I
neglected to have it looked at by a doctor (I usually don't see a doctor
for a seizure as all they ever really do is keep me under observation for
a couple of hours and send me home).

Well, the wound itself did eventually heal but it healed in such a way
that it left a "flap" of flesh (running lengthways) along the side of my
tongue. It's no longer sore or swollen or anything but I'd really like to
have it repaired. Trouble is, I really have no idea what kind of a doctor
I'd need to see in order to have it done. I'm assuming just seeing a GP
would be about useless because from the way it looks, the wound is
probably going to have to be reopened or something before it can be
stitched and I get the impression that GPs generally don't like to deal
with this sort of thing.

Next is the area in which it's located. I'm thinking there must be some
sort of healthcare professional who specializes in injuries to the mouth
and tongue but I wouldn't even know where to start looking. Would I be
looking for an oral surgeon or what?

TIA Sorry about the length

Yes, you need to look for an oral surgeon.

An oral surgeon should be able to take care of this for you.  If you feel
that you want to see a physician instead, I would suggest an ENT specialist.
I'm sure either one would be able to evaluate your situation and provide you
with options.
