Hi there,
I have had a problem with my tooth for a while now and I was hoping
somebody may be able to give me some advice. Let me start at the
beginning.
Went to the dentist in incredible pain and had an infection cleaned
from my front tooth. The dentist removed the nerve and put in temporary
filling he said I would feel pain relief after a few days. I was not
prescribed antibiotics and two days later the pain was still there and
my face had swelled so I called him up at which point he posted a
prescription through my door.
After 5 days on amoxicillin the swelling and was still there and I went
back. I was prescribed more amoxicillin and metronizadole. After 5 days
taking this the swelling had reduced and the tooth felt a bit better.
Then a gap of a week or so and hen 3 days before I was due to have the
root filled permanently I noticed the swelling coming back (mercifully
without the pain). The temporary filling seemed to have worn a bit. I
saw an emergency dentist who gave me more metronizadole and left the
tooth open to drain. Not much drained from the tooth and I still had a
hard swelling above the tooth.
I saw the original dentist again yesteday who cleaned the root again
and lanced the swelling by cutting the gum above the tooth. He told me
that the swelling drained a little but I am still left with the hard
lump. I have 2 days worth of metronizadole left and I am giving the
area warm salt water baths regularly trying to apply small amounts of
pressure to the abscess. I am not noticing any further reduction in
swelling or bad taste in my mouth. Is there anything else I can do? How
long should it ake to drain? I am anxious to get rid of this lump. What
happens if it will not drain on its own?
Any help/advice appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

You would appear to be Oxford. Which practice did you go to?

I would rather not comment on that Robert.
Sorry.

This situation, alas, is quite common. Assuming there are no cracks in
the root, some of these infections--even on single rooted teeth can be
devilishly difficult to control.
Sometimes it takes repeated sessions cleaning out the canal before the
infection resolves. The problem is that if there is a lot of infection
in the tissues it is difficult to dry and fill the canal(s), which makes
the infection more difficult to clean up.
I'd give the dentist a couple more sessions of irrigating and drying,
and attemting to close the canal. Leaving the tooth open may seem like
a good idea, but it will only perpetuate the contamination of the canal.
If there have been a few sessions of instrumentation and it still
hasn't been possible to fill the canal due to drainage, it might be a
good idea to do a culture and sensitivity. Perhaps a better antibiotic
could be found.

I'm not a dentist, or a medical person. But, from what you're
describing, you are far more forgiving of your dentist than you should
be. I'd telephone and ask for an appointment the same day.
