I had all 4 extracted last month. Now over 3 weeks after the surgery
and the lower part of my mouth is still a bit numb. I was concerend
that a nerve was severed/damaged, however, the doctor said that it's
fine and that it just takes some people longer to recover. He even
poked the numbed area with his surgery knife and asked if I felt it,
which I did. Does it really take that long to recover? I may be
panicking over nothing, but woudl still like a second opinion.

Difficult to say - It happens.  And it's nobody's fault - It's a chance
of the procedure. This was told to you before the surgery, and it's on
the consent that you signed, too.  I wouldn't worry about it.

Now that you've mentioned it, I do remember reading that clause in the
forms I signed. If the nerve is indeed severed/damaged, will it ever
recover to the state prior to the surgery?

Sometimes the roots of the teeth are close to the nerve canal, and
removing them won't damage it - however, the inflammation from healing,
which can last a while, will cause this sensation.  Some cases take a
few weeks to months to resolve.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how do you rate the numbness?

And, is this sensation on a downward swing towards normalcy?

I would rate it a 7, not as severe as it was right after the surgery,
but strong enough that I can feel it's there. I believe it's healing,
though at an extremely (emphasis on extremely) slow pace.

Then it's just a complication of the surgery, and it's a waiting game.
Unfortunately, taking these teeth out with 100% no post operative
problems just doesn't happen - A certain percentage of patients, a
small percent, report these problems - you just happen to fall within
this small statistic.

Just wait it out.  I'm sure it will get better - most do.

Thanks. I really appreciate all your feedback.

It can take up to 6 months to a year for a peripheral nerve to completely heal.

Do not panic yet .... the reason of course is overly aggressive wisdo
tooth removal before its time .........
