irrigating syringe

i got some wisdom teeth taken out, and they gave me an
irrigating syringe to squirt water on the area.  what
is the idea behind this?  isn't it roughly the same
as me just drinking water?

The syringe allows you to rinse dried tissue out of the socket. I
suspect it works a lot better.
