Hi,

First question: I have several slightly decayed area's on my teeth along the
gumline, they aren't cavities yet but the dentist expects them to become
cavities in a couple of years.
Is it a good idea to have such area's filled with composite to prevent
future decay and for cosmetics?
Can such filling near the gumline irritate the gums or cause recession?

Second question: I have 2 between the teeth cavities one in a lower canine
one in a lower bicuspid. Usually they treat such cavities by drilling from
the healthy top of the tooth down to the decayed part between the teeth.
Is there a method which requires less destruction of healthy tooth, maby
removing a filling in another tooth to get access to the cavity on the side?

Really apreciate your answers,

Thanks, Hans

Does he do stock tips too?  Or is his future vision confined to teeth?

If there is a cosmetic problem--erosion, abfraction, etc.--perhaps.  It
will not prevent future decay.  Proper diet and oral hygiene will
prevent decay though.

If the restoration is properly finished and above the gumline, no.  If
it is below the gumline or not properly finished, yes.

As much as I appreciate this train of thought (you need to place two
fillings to restore one cavity), it's a bit silly.  If the surface
between the teeth is accessible it makes sense.  But removing an
otherwise good filling to provide direct access to a decayed area
carries a significant risk to the otherwise healthy tooth being drilled
for access.  While it is conceivable that this could be a good idea in
some circumstances, I can't think of a circumstance that I would do this.
