Hi. I have been looking to get a lingual frenectomy & a tongue
burification done, but I've never been to an oral surgeon before. So I
had a few questions about the procedures of a typical oral surgeon.
How do they determine prices of a surgery? How do consultations work &
are they necessary? If the doctor is unwilling to perform the surgery
or if the surgery is too expensive, is the consultation fee refunded?
Would a doctor reply to a letter about performing the surgery? If you
can answer any of these questions or direct me to an online resource,
it'd be greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
Sarah

Usually the consultation fees not not refuded, you are paying for the
professional's time then.
Most doctors would reply to letters depending on their schedule
Prices are set by many different methods, insurance, etc.
I have done a few minor ilngual frenectomies with the laser, for
functional issues, however your message doesn't appear to be for this.
Why are do you want these procedures?

Ask the receptionist if she can ask the surgeon if they are willing to
perform these procedures for cosmetic reasons. You will usually get a
response. Purpose of the consultation is to determine if you are a
candidate for the procedures and to inform you of the risks and
benefits and your sound mind.
The tongue bifurcation is not your typical procedure some surgeons
would not even know how to do it or it may be the first time they are
doing it. This means 2 things 1) you will be the guinie pig and will
have to hold them harmless in writing of all screw-ups during and after
the procedure. 2) the fee presented could vary significantly since this
is a very uncommon procedure. Your best bet is to sweet talk the
receptionist.

p.s.
that tongue bifurcation is going to hurt like hell.

p.p.s.
that consultation fee might even be double since the surgeon would have
to consult with his/her attorney about doing such a procedure and risks
of you sueing them.

Only slightly gauged ear lobes.

Essentially for cosmetic reasons, I find split tongues to be
aesthetically pleasing.

Are the costs given without a consultation? I've read that tongue
burification is a rather simple, low-risk procedure, are fees based on
complexity of a procedure? If not, then how are costs typically
determined? Thanks for all of your help.

Sorry to bring you the news but you may find it hardpressed to find an
OMFS in the US that will perform this for you. AAOMS released info a
few years ago warning those members against such a procedure. Doubtful
any malpractice carrier will provide coverage either which means the
surgeon is own their own.
