Fluoride question

When I got my braces, I was given a small tube of
fluoride use at bedtime--I got the braces in
the middle of December 2005, and religiously
used the additional fluoride for ~2 months,
then I noticed (and several other people around
me as well) that my teeth were 'graying' significantly--I
use a fluoride toothpaste and brush my teeth
several times a day, and our water here also has
fluoride in it--after stopping the extra fluoride,
my teeth turned white again after a few weeks.
I still brush several times a day, as well as floss
to keep my braces clean. (Yes, my dental hygienist
loves me, LOL, because a cleaning usually takes
all of 5-10 minutes total). ;-)

Am I right in guessing I was getting way too much
fluoride in my teeth? Even though the additional
bit is only 1% solution? Am I causing myself
some extra problems later on down the line?

TIA,
Carolyne in TX

Sounds like you are using Stannous Fluoride not Sodium Fluoride.
Sodium Fluoride does not discolour teeth.
Just bleach your teeth and discontinue the fluoride and replace with
Sodium Fluoride.

Thank you! I didn't even need to bleach them, they've returned to their
normal coloring since I've discontinued the extra fluoride. Another
whew! here. :-)

Care to elaborate Joel? Why is topical fluoride application hype for
adults? I thought a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash is always a good
idea.
