How long does it take to train as a hygienist and what sort of salary does
it pay?

In the UK, it's a 2 year full-time course to train as a hygienist. The
minimum requirements are five GCSEs (grade A to C, including English
and a science subject) and either a dental nursing qualification or two
"A" levels. A lot of dental hygienists started out as dental nurses.

As a rough guide, a hygienist working in an NHS practice can earn
around £21,000 a year; with experience this may rise to around
£30,000. An experienced hygienist working in a non-NHS practice may
earn up to £38,000 (those figures are from a 2005 career guidance
catalogue).

Just curious
I understand in the UK, it's compulsory to study French as a second
language. How important is this subject as far as scholarships are
concerned?
