second opinion

Dear All,

Hi.

I brought my two children aged 13 and 10 to the pediatric dentist last
night and I was recommended to have root canal on two teeth for my 13
year old and 7 baby teeth extraction for my 10 year old .  She
recommended this after taking x-rays.

For my 10 year old, she recommended that 7 baby teeth must be pulled
because soon premanent teeth are coming out and they might not come in
properly because of the baby teeth.  Among the seven that she wants to
be extracted, two are wiggly, and above these two are small teeth
(fang?) that are coming out.  Since these two are wiggly, is it fine if
we will just wait for it to fell off or really have to go to an oral
surgeon to have these extracted?  This wiggly teeth with the fang are
not bothering my kid. The other five baby teeth are perfectly fine and
are not bothering my daughter either and no fang tooth coming out
either.  Is extracting these 5 baby teeth proper? or should we go get a
second opinion?

On my 13 year old, I am not comfortable with doing the root canal for
her because the teeth are not bothering her.  Can an x-ray alone
concludes that a root canal needs to be done?  If i need a second
opinion on the root canal, should I go to a pediatric dentist or to an
endodontist.

I hope someone can help me.

Thank you.

These are all appropriate questions for your pediatric dentist.  If you
are not satisfied with the answers a second opinion is appropriate.
It is absolutely possible that the x-ray indicates a need for root
canal--even in the absence of pain.  Either an pediatric, general
dentist or endodontist should be able to confirm this.

Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

How about my question for those baby teeth of my 10 year old?

Thanks a lot.

I agree with Steve, and would just add that whether or not something hurts
is not always the best indicator of whether care is or is not needed. An
asympomatic tooth can be causing damage to bone or surrounding teeth. Get
another opinion if you have doubts, but don't let pain be the deciding
factor.

As for the extractions, once again you would be best served by getting an
opinion from someone who has seen your child. 10 extractions does sound like
a lot, but that doesn't mean they aren't all needed. It is impossible to
tell by a description alone.

Find a dentist you trust. It need not be a pediatric dentist or endodontist.
A general dentist may suggest you see one of those specialists to have the
work done, but should be able to make a proper diagnosis.

It is certainly a consideration, esp. if the permanent teeth are coming
in crooked.
Here, if you want a second opinion, I might go to an orthodontist to
evaluate.
