ROOT CANAL/CROWN NOW OR LATER?

I'm 43 y.o.  I have a bottom rear molar with an old large amalgam that
is occasionally cold sensitive.  Should I get it root canalled now or
wait until I start experience real difficulty with it?  I also ask
because my dental insurance will be running out soon and I doubt I'll
be getting new dental insurance any time soon.

Also, if i get the root canal, should I go with a gold crown
(aesthetics don't concern me, strength does) or are the new ceramic
crowns good enough?  Recommendation of particular brand of ceramic
crowns?

thanks for any advice

You would not have a root canal unless there is a problem with the
pulp.  Cold sensitivity does not necessarily indicate a problem with the
nerve.
Your concerns should be shared with your dentist--at the time of your
next exam.

Root canal ..... means root canal treatment, also
known as pulpECtomy (not pulpotomy), or excision
of the tooth-borne portion of the mandibular branch
of the inferior alveolar nerve.

Agreed but,

Likely the crown prep will be the final insult to the pulp.
It would depend on what the radiograph reveals.

Constricted pulp chamber, pulp stones, etc....
May be wiser in the long run to do endo on an *iffy* pulp
than wait till the pts ins. runs out... then....

YMMV

Maybe yes, maybe no.  Show me an x-ray.

Why not a new composite restoration? Root canal
therapy weakens a tooth a great deal, especially
when the inside gets hollowed out.

I had a similar problem with two old, large amalgam fillings, in tooth 2 and 15. In my case, like in many (and likely most) cases, it was just deteriorated and simply needed to be replaced. Nothing fancy.

So ask your dentist what you need.
