Just wondered how long I might have to wait for the pain to subside after having
a lower molar removed recently. (Yes I suppose it is a bit like how long is a
piece of string). Anyway, the story is...

1st attempt at removing molar failed - too painful

3 months later 2nd attempt failed. Crown borke off (due to decay below gum
line). Roots left in. Much swelling around cheek.

3 days later see by emergency dental service as pain so bad. Another dentist
removed both "retained root". I asked why this had all been so difficult and was
told that the roots were "hook shaped". This 2nd (imho very skillful dentist)
succeeded in removing the roots by breaking them  into piece - rather than just
pulling - which what  the first dentist had done - and, I feel sure did my
jaw/gums no favours at all. Could they be damaged by that? Is there anything I
can do to find out - or help myself in some way? There were considerable number
of local injections given - including one into what felt like the back of the
roof of my mouth (maybe upper jaw somewhere).

The problem is that just as he was finishing, the pain stepped up several
notches (and I thought it couldn't get worse!). He seemed surprised at the level
of pain I reported to him but said "it shouldn't be). I was wondeding if working
on the extraction of the roots only 3 days after a very painful failed
extraction is causing the level of pain I am still feeling. I don't mean there
was a choice - just trying to see why pain still exists.

So it 8 days now since the roots were taken out and I'm still in a lot of pain.
Finally my question then, is, is this "normal" I mean within the bounds on what
to expect. I'm living on painkillers.
