Hi
Is narrow specialization a good thing? E.g. a prosthodontist with 20
years of experience, who also does general practice - any chance he'd
be 1) less experienced in fillings than a general practice dentist, 2)
less experienced in prosthodontics than someone who does 100%
prosthodontics?
Thanks

Over here, we have general dentists, restorative
dentists plus specialists under ONE ROOF.
Many times we have three docs give INDEPENDENT
consultations and opinions to a patient ..... and WoW!
Do they love it!

No simple answer here is going to help you. A prosthodontist who
doesn't choose to limit practice still has presumably gone through a
training program and is board-eligible. Of course, general dentists are
not likely to refer to a specialist who doesn't limit his/her practice.
But any dentist who graduates dental school and does general practice
should be able to do fillings.
The variability in abilities between dentists with a given
qualification is so great that trying to make blanket judgements about
overall competence of specialists vs. generalists is not helpful.
I would say that you shouldn't have your uncle the oral surgeon who
hasn't done a root canal since dental school 35 years ago take care of
that upper second molar that needs endo though.
