I burned my mouth on some hot food several days ago.  There's an angry
red spot in there that really hurts when my tongue brushes against it
and when food touches it.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process?

Just some time.  Orabase is good as a protectant when you're eating.
If there is swelling or drainage, have your dentist look at it.

Stings like hell for a couple seconds when you apply it.

Doesn't really last six hours, if the sore is almost constantly in
contact with your tongue.  More like 1-2 hours.

But that's enough time to get through dinner, I guess.
