I went to the periodonist the other day after my 2 appts for deep
scaling and root planing. Upon my return to evalutate pockets the
dentist said I have to have perio surgery in 2 different sessions. Can
someone explain what they actually do during surgery. I get very
apprehensive when going there. Is it awful lol tell the truth or are my
survival rates good. Will I be able to go back to work the same day or
shouldnt plan it. Can someone explain the anesthesia part as well is it
just regular novacaine
thanks

Joel,
You have a periodontist working for you... maybe he can answer Mark'
questions and alleviate some anxiety
Thanks

I am sorry for this delayed repsonse. Here is a message from joel, on
of our resident dentists. His bottomline seems to indicate that thi
surgery is nothing to worry about. I ma sorry he did not address th
anesthetic question
Good luck

From Dr. Joel Eichen
True, and periodontics is one of my favorite areas as well.
As you may already know my degree is in dental surgery (D.D.S.) whil
those other fakirs (sadly just like me) are D.M.D.s or doctors o
DENTAL MEDICINE. C'Mon ........ when you need serious stuff done yo
ALWAYS need a dental surgeon
Now I am joking of course, in that DDS and DMD are in fact the same
EXACTLY THE SAME, although many patients believe I have some advance
status. Its balderdash! Complete rubbish. Someone in her infinit
wisdom decided that dental surgeon was misleading so they vowed t
change everyone to D.M.D in time
Periodontal "surgery" (in quotes) means cutting the gums which a barbe
can do in many countries and used to do in ALL COUNTRIES. That is unti
we got fancy-shmancy with our degrees and stuff. So prognosis i
excellent, yes you can go back to work, and the success depends on
what's being done

Actually the anesthetic is xylocaine a.k.a. lidocaine
which is NOT novocaine. We dropped novocaine in
1945 quite literally. So you will be ok with the anesthetic.
Hey? What's the name of the procedure, the sugery?
Its like I'm going in "FOR SURGERY" on my body. Oh,
you mean open heart surgery or to remove a wart?
They are different operations.
So tell us what sugery, I mean surgery.
