bad pain two days after root canal treatment

I had a root canal treatment done on the tooth #30 about 5 years ago,
then the tooth was covered by a crown. A recent x-ray showed that there
was an infection on the root of the tooth, and my dentist sent me to an
endodontist. So two days ago I went to the endo- and underwent a 2-hour
root canal procedure. The doctor removed the crown, did the root canal
treatment, which involved lots of different instruments and syringes,
and prepared the tooth for a new crown (build-up). I was absolutely
fine after the procedure----no pain, no swelling.

However, I started having dull pain the next day, and now, two days
later, the pain is so strong that I have to take 800mg ibuprofen every
4 hours. It feels like pain of the jaw/bone.

There is no swelling. Everything looks normal, just hurts a lot.

My questions are:

1) is it normal to have such pain?
2) does it indicate of any serious complication/infection?
3) does it mean that I'm going to have to undergo RCT again?
4) is it likely to go away eventually?
5) do I have to take antibiotics?
I have a problem with antibiotics, having taken lots of them in the
past few years. I have really bad stomach reaction to most antibiotics
and I suspect that I'm resistant, since I've never completed the
numerous courses I've had to start (mostly after dental works which I
have all the time).

As of right now what I fear the most is the possiblity of
infection/another root canal/extraction. This pain worries me. If I
knew that it's normal to have pain after such treatment I would relax
and just take painkillers. :) Having no swelling is a good sign, it
gives me hope/

Thanks in advance for any comments/advice.

All of these questions should be directed to the dentist who examined
your condition and performed the treatment. He knows more about your
dental situation than anyone on the Internet -- and I assume that he
has been paid to take care of your case.

it mostly should be related to gases generated by the body in the apical
zone, it should go away in 2/3 days with help from some anti-inflammatory
medication.
if it doesn't then go straight back to the dentist that had it done.
Don't eat/bite from that side, if you feel that the tooth is "higher" than
normal or you touch on that tooth first than on other teeth, go to the
dentist to have it lowered a little bit so there's less pressure and the
healing takes less time.
hope it helps

Cheers!

Some dentists are complete arseholes and you just HAVE to ask elsewhere.

You should have been given at least a small qty of painkillers, such
as Percocet or to a lesser extent Vicoden, and that can be coupled with
two Advil which will keep the swelling down and an antibiotic such as
Pennicilin or Amoxocillin to stave off infection.

I am in no way a Dentist or a medical professional in anyway,  but I
tend to find that I seem to know more than some of them do, LOL.

because you being no health professional you should NOT recommend ANY kinds
of medication.
you can put someone's life in danger.
please don't auto-medicate.
Cheers!

Sorry my friend,

I was just relating to my own personal situation in the past which
was very similar and caused alot of pain and discomfort.  In the scheme
of things,  my recomendation is not unusual at all, and I have seen
given not only to myself, but others in the same situation.  I cannot
understand for the life of my why someone who was in pain and
discomfort after a root canal was sent off with out any tyoe of meds
for pain or infection.  I can understand about the narcotic pain meds,
to an extent, because of the issues with them,  but they should at
least be offered.  Also,  here is a tricky one, I just had a root canal
in Nov.  The Dr gave me a prescripton for Vicoden ES (7.5) and also a
yellow envelope with six pcs of 600mg iboprofen.  If I am correct, isnt
that doseage only available by prescription?  I know there are 200mg
avail for OTC?  Seemed a little strange to me,  and the 600 worked as
good is not better than the painkiller,  except at bedtime for the
first night or two..  Again,  maybe is SOP,  but seems a little odd to
me.

Again,  I just made a suggestion base on a similar experience that I
am going through,  and posted a disclaimer that I was not a Dr.  Sorry
if I ruffled any feathers.  I just know what the OP is going through,
and tooth pain can be a really bad thing to have to deal with.  Just
wanted to make a suggestion to help out.

Thank you Gabe.  And again,  sorry if I offended anyone,  I don't
mean to step on any toes!
