I noticed yesterday a small "chip" on my youngest childs tooth. He will
be one year old very soon. I thought it was an injury and got an
emergency dentist appt. The dentist took one glance and said that it
was a cavity and his 3 other top teeth show demineralization and
possible decay. He said it was from breastfeeding at night.
He goes on to say that he will have to crown it when he is 2
(cooperation was what he cited) but if it gets severe before then it
may be unsavable and have to be pulled. That of course is the last
thing I want :o( They set my son an appt up to come back in 6 months
to see how its progressing. He said that I could of course stop the
progress if I make sure to wipe the teeth with damp gauze after EVERY
feeding.
That said, internet research gives me so much conflicting info that
maybe there may be something that could be done NOW??
Before now I was brushing his teeth with water. Yesterday I went and
bought a baby toothpaste by Gerber (top ingrediant is Sorbitol). It
does not have floride in it as the dentist said its not safe for him to
swallow. He said the flouride in water should be good... but my son has
always been a BIG water drinker and obviously its not helping thus far!
I have brushed his teeth after every feeding today. I also ordered
these teeth wipes called Spiffies dental wipes that are Xylitol that
claim to help slow the process so that I can wipe his mouth after night
feedings since weaning isnt something I can do overnight!
A friend told me maybe I should rub a teeny tiny amount of kids
toothpaste WITH flouride on the teeth themselves? is this wise?
Is there anything I can suggest to the dentist that we do??? I just
feel funny about waiting it out. I would really like to avoid removal
of the teeth!!!!!!
Any advice would be VERY VERY appreciated
Dear concerned Mother:
I have read all your post and I can tell you that your dentist seems to be
mostly right in everything, the child is too young now, and it's not
preferable to use total anesthesia for 2 or three temporary teeth, which
would implie more dangers than benefits, caries or cavities is a
demineralization process which has many factors, among them: bacteria, our
body defense system, a sustrate (sugar=sucrose), and.............TIME.
theese 3 factors don't make caries without time the fourth factor, so
there's the window of opportunity that your dentist is telling you, higiene,
higiene, higiene, lower down the sugar consumption, make the mouth of your
baby less acid, regain mineralization, this will make darker teeth (in the
hole I mean not ALL the tooth), but they will be able to STAY in PLACE, in
order to KEEP THE SPACE for the new teeth, untill replaced by the permanent
teeth at an older stage of life when the child CAN and MUST understand why
and how to clean his/her teeth.
Maybe teeth with STOPPED CARIES are better than no teeth at all, or than
teeth that produce abcesses and infections that might affect the germs of
the permanent teeth still in formation inside the bone, something we don't
want to happen.
So there is a substance that might colour your babies teeth black but It's
to be used ONLY by a dental professional by topication of the caries, this
substance produces a fast and hard REMINERALIZATION, but I don't know if
there is such substance in your country, or if it's authorized by the health
authorities, it is used in Argentina where I worked as a licensed dentist
for 8 years, but I didn't find it in Israel where I am located already 5
years, so please ask your dentist about topications with
Silver-Diamino-Fluoride, which I used to know as FAGAMIN, check it out It
MIGHT help you, now take in consideration that this is JUST an idea and
maybe some other dental professionals that do work in the states would be
able to tell us about the use of this substance in the USA which I sincerely
ignore, and share their oppinions with us.
Also I'd check with the baby's pediathrician about how long should you
breastfeed him and when.
I hope this is helpfull to you and your precious child, please get us some
feedback on the subject. I'm listening...
Cheers!
Gabe
