Question About Referred Pain

I had a periodontal pocket curretted today due to swelling that occurs
from time to time. I was given local anesthesia. There is no abscess on
the tooth itself, just a chronic gum problem if I'm late on my
cleanings.

The tooth is #19 but since I got home a few hours ago, I feel pain in my
chin, more like in line with #16. I also feel pain in my temples and end
of jaw. None of this is constant but very annoying. I took 2 Advils a
few hours ago but it's still happening. I have to add that I have TMJ
especiall on that side and get these pains when I am nervous.

I would appreciate it very much if someone can tell me if this could be
radiating from the work that was done on 19 (that tooth and gum feel ok
now). I am starting to worry that another tooth may be at fault but my
x-rays are fine and it's happening now right after the work so it seems
unlikely (even the other side of my face and jaw are aching). I hope
it's just tension but would love to hear any feedback or assurance. Have
you heard this before? Thank you.

Without an x-ray it is difficult to say.
It could be you are feeling this from keeping your mouth open too long.
It could be your TMJ acting up.
It could be another tooth.
It could be the same tooth. (sometimes a periodontal abscess can infect
the root tip of the tooth and this is now a perio-endo abscess.)
If you are getting this abscess more frequently maybe you may want to
think about pulling #19 and placing an implant. Having said this, you
still need to maintain the health of your gums and the implant. A
neglected implant is just as bad as your current situation.

Thank you very much for the reply. The pain has subsided since. The
periodontist said it is just an inflamed gum from bacteria and not a
tooth abscess. I have no signs of a tooth abscess and this part of my
gum has had problems for years. Do you think I need a periapical x-ray
to make sure? I had one 3 months ago of my whole mouth and have no
pain...chances are if the gum acts up on and off for years, it's just a
vulnerable pocket. I hope, sure wouldn't want an abscess...this is a
root canaled tooth. If the initial lump was from a tooth abscess,
wouldn't it be worse by now? It's fine after she curretted the area and
I am using a third of a tetracycline capsule mixed with water twice a
day. I have to have a full mouth cleaning on Monday. Do you think I
should insist on an x-ray being that I have no pain or swelling now, nor
lower gum pain near the root nor pain on biting?
