a few months ago i started to get greenish plaque on my teeth. i have
started to take different supplements around the time that i noticed
it. i dont know if the staining was already there or not. i got the
supplements from a holistic dentist, so i was paying more attention to
my teeth at that time. this greenish plaque has not gone away. i have
stopped taking the supplements a few weeks ago. i guessing it isnt
them. before i could just brush the greenish plaque off. it would come
back several times a day. now it has stained my teeth and will not come
off in some areas. i have been looking up what causes greenish/black
stains and found that it could be mercury. i dont know how i would be
exposed to mercury... does anyone know what else it could be? how can i
stop this? my dentist said that it could be juice stains or iron. i
dont drink juice, only water. and i dont take iron supplements. do i
have a deficiency of some sort? any suggestions are welcome! thank you
soo much.

Hello [fill in your name here]

I have seen dark green stains that I attributed to bile caused by a
patient who has frequent gastric reflux.  Parents of young women who
are suspected of bulemia are instructed to check toilet bowls for dark
green stains.

See my article on gastric reflux on my web site:
http://leaderdmd.dentistryonline.com in the "about the dentist"
section.  You may have reflux and not know that you do.

Assuming this is not a prank you are aware that amalgams contain Hg.
Interestingly I developed stains on my front teeth that eventually
never
went away,  a long time ago. Anyway regadless of whether this is Hg
or not you should be aware of one fact which is that corrosion can
occur
on the hidden side of the amalgam, due to galvanic action while
oxidation
makes the exposed side look normal.

i dont have any mercury fillings. i went to a holistic dentist to have
my two wisdom teeth saved. the green/black plaque started before he
even did any work on my teeth.

Yep, could be many things. Also make sure you don't have any crowns
with amalgam buildup. I did get weird stains on my teeth starting when
I was around 11, kind of brownish yellowish . Dentist said it
may be tetracycline but I didn't take it. The stains got progressively
worse
on the front teeh even though I brushed vigrorsouly and eventually had
to be ground out and veneers put on top. I figured it may have
something
to do with my amalgam problem if the bacteria mesh with Hg off the
filling
staining the tooth but I never completely figured out what caused it.
(Wasn't Fluoride either).

Amalgams do not contain any mercury .....
jetsoncity@gmail.com - 03 Jan 2006 14:06 GMT
yes they do... and that mercury is released into the blood stream each
time you chew, or drink anything hot, or smoke, or grind your teeth!

but it will keep coming back. i need to know why this just randomly
started so i can stop it.

Diet and home care (most likely).

Tea, coffee, colas, wine, tobacco, and lots of foods can lead to
staining.

Changes in brushing and flossing habits could also be part of the
problem.

Even medications can have an effect.
