First of all, should one eat something before going to the dentist
where one will be getting a LOCAL anaesthetic?
My wife said she heard that one should eat first. I did not eat and I
wonder if that's why I had more pain that usual?
Now, as far as pain pills go, I've sometimes had dentists recommend
tylenol, sometimes tylenol 3 (with codeine) and other times ibuprofen.
What is the difference between tylenol and ibuprofen for dental pain?
Can you take both at the same time?
I am taking both 3 x ibuprofens and 1 x tylenol-3, together, and so
far neither one seems to be helping much. Can I take 2 tylenol 3's at
once AND 3 ibuprofens? I have some vicodins in the cabinet, but hate
to take them, as vicodin makes my skin itchy.

I'm not a dentist, but as far as I'm aware, it's recommended to eat
first because you may not be able to eat for some time afterwards
(because of the risk of biting your tongue). I don't think there's a
connection between the contents of your stomach and the efficacy of
local anesthetic.

Again as far as I know, ketoprofen or ibuprofen are usually recommended
for dental pain, and especially if there's any sort of infection
present (due to their antiflammatory properties). But for some people,
tylenol with codeine seems to work better.

I normally recommend patients to have something to eat, esp. if they are
having an extraction or something that will get their adrenaline going.
last thing you want is to have a hypo on your hands.

I'm not sure about the eating question.
Acetaminophen (found in Tylenol, and also in Vicodin) is toxic to the liver.
Many acute problems and deaths are related to acetaminophen overdose.
If memory serves, ibuprophen can be toxic to kidneys.
The two, combined, have a much greater painkilling effect, but also much
more toxic. If you're not getting pain relief from the combination,
something is wrong. Doubling Tylenol 3 (which contains acetaminophen) with
Vicodin (which contains acetaminophen) is a good way to have a liver
failure.
Don't know what else to tell you,c ept good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'll be careful about taking these together in
the future.
