Link that Bruxers might check

http://neurology.health-cares.net/bruxism-treatment.php

Excerpts:

"though presently there is no cure available for bruxers, it may be
beneficial to work at reducing stress and anxiety before bedtime, by a
winding down activity such as massage, meditation or reading.."

"..To prevent damage to teeth, night guards, or appliances (splints)
have been used since the 1930s to treat teeth grinding, clenching and
TMJ disorders...."

NTI site would be considered SPAM, since that is a commercial product
(I think).
Also I did not know there was an NTI site.  Perhaps the NTI is a
wonderful device, as many have claimed... but I have no experience wiht
the NTI.  I am interested all treatments, including relaxation and
stress relief techniques.

Using all treatments available leads to one thing:  iatroepidemic
I'm with Dartos.  I'm interested in the treatments that work ... that
is, the ones that improve the quality of life with the least risk of
harm.

Maybe she thinks orthognathic surgery to prevent tempormandibular joint
destruction in asymptomatic patients is a good treatment?

How about a full coverage splint for primary clenchers?

I guess it's none of my business why someone else has an interest in
anything really.  My particular interests fall heavily into "...the harm
it causes".  pgs. 325-364

Yeah I suppose you are right, but statements like she made in this group, in
this day and age, are bound to bring out some serious replies about 'the
harm' all the treatments available can provide.

First page of the book I was just going to check on my lunch break says:
"This is a book.  Unless you don't read, then it's a coaster."

You two could have written a similar preface in your book.  "This a book.
Unless you refuse to read about iatroepidemics, then it's a coaster."

I like the top paragraph on P338

Webby and Dartos,

I am interested in hearing your opinions on what may work without
creating more harm to the patient if you would like to share. It sounds
like there is no good, clear-cut treatment for TMJ disorders. (I am
surmising this from discussions thus far and from opening the TMJ
Association website that Webby pointed out).

I apologize for not having looked too closely at Dr. Boyd's NTI device.
I do not know that much about it other than it appears to be a
splint-like device that fits onto the anterior teeth.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Dr. Boyd mentions
that by wearing a NTI device, the parafunction that is present, might
be deprogrammed....(I believe he uses the term "deprogram."  If not, I
apologize!

I am curious to know what his theory (or others) is regarding the exact
mechanisms that may be players at work (re: parafunction as well as why
the NTI might help to deprogram this parafunction).

As I mentioned earlier, several weeks ago, I was intrigued by some of
the discussions surrounding his book on migraine relief.  I was
intrigued because I suffer from infrequent migraine.  I also devote
time to studying the pathogensesis of heart failure (my own interest,
and this also aligns with the work I am supporting).   When a person
develops heart failure,  several compensatory mechansims are activated
(including increased sympathetic drive).  Sympathetic activation was
brought up in the aforementioned discussion.  This piched my interest.
I became interested in better understanding parafunction, sleep bruxism
and TMJ disorders.

Since then I have have been reading a LITTLE bit about the potential
associations of sleep bruxism, sleep apnea, heart failure, and the
stress response. I am interested in finding  out whether there has been
anything published that may indicate interactive roles that the CNS,
ANS and/or the inflammatory responses might play in these
associations... or if these are merely coincidental and not necessarily
associated pathologies.  It seems there ARE some interesting
publications.  I am starting to review these.

To anyone that reads this post and is offended by any of my
(mis)interpretations or recountings of previous discussions, I
apologize in advance.  Be  forewarned that everything I have stated is
opinion only and open for discussion/correction.  I can safely say that
I cannot recall with 100% accuracy any of the discussions that I read
at the other dental forum site.

Also I am obviously not an expert in this.  I am interested in learning
more.  I am doing so on my own, but I am looking for an informed group
discussion at some point.  However if that never happens, that's ok
with me too.

Thanks,
Sue
Dartos - 29 Dec 2005 19:27 GMT
Likewise I'm not a neurologist, but I do know a little about
parafunction relating to dentistry.

For starters, I would expand on the topic of 'bruxism'.  Bruxism
relates primarily to tooth wear from rubbing them against each other.
It is a concern, but it is not the main factor governing parafunctional
activity and the subsequent problems.

Most TMJ pain, headaches, cracked teeth, and abfractions occur due to
*clenching*.  Clenching often involves much greater forces exerted
to the muscles, joints, and teeth than mere bruxism.

Safe non-invasive treatments to conteract clenching have been attempted
for years.  Invasive expensive treatments have also been attempted.
Nothing was very successful or predictable.  The more invasive therapies
often led to a patient being worse for the treatment.

The NTI is the one device that will greatly lessen clenching and
thereby ease many symptoms.  It is not a magic cure that stops
clenching.  It is a safe, non-invasive, effective treatment to reduce
parafunctional activity.

It is the best therapy that I have seen to date.

AC made an NTI for me.

Was a skeptic, but after 3-5 weeks, I was convinced.

Switched all of my current 'full arch' patients to an
NTI @ no charge.

Have had a bit of trouble convincing some that they
will need less crowns, or other dental treatment in the
future, for a very small investment.

Now theres a word that doesn't get used nearly enough these days!
Sue - 28 Dec 2005 15:19 GMT
My New Year wish for Amatus, Whamatus and Tim is that they are able to
stop viewing the  world as one big stinky place out to take advantage
of them or others.  If I could, I would send them the song "What a
Wonderful World" sung by Louis Armstrong.   My wish is that they would
listen to that song and seriously take it to heart.  This wish may
cause further inner anger, but sometimes that is OK (IMO).  Sometimes
one must confront their inner conflicts.  Looking for scapegoats to
"pound" and to "beat" only  demonstrates inner unhappiness IMHO.  That
is the only logical conclusion I can draw from their posts.

My wish for Stovepipe is that he stops smoking.  His smoking does not
set a good example for family or patients.  Quitting tobacco would also
provide SP better health, something we all want.  Other than that, I
wish him further happiness and prosperity.... but the latter are
meaningless if one does not also enjoy good health (IMHO).

My wish for Dr. Bornfeld is continued health, happiness and
prosperity!!!!

My wish for Webby is that she continues to finding healing through
means that suit her.. .such as this Usenet and the regulars that
support her.

My wish for Jan is that she finds peace and learns to ignore all those
that relish in finding a scapegoat to bash.  In this manner she may not
feel compelled to throw daggers at these people as well, that continue
only to personally bash her.  She must stop for them to stop and vice
versa (IMHO).

To Jim I wish that his new smile will bring him MUCH joy and few
complications!!!  The investment ($) towards implants is well worth it
, IMH (non-expert) O.

The others ... Dartos, Vaughn, Tony Bad, Pell Mell  and other names I
may have forgotten...  I wish you well too.

The world is only stinky if you choose to look at it that way.

JMO,

Sue
PS To Joel.  I have already told him on the phone.  He is doing so
well. He has opened at least one clinic in Philly that provides
low-cost dental implants, takes Medicaid children and caters to
lower-income families.  His current philosophy is one toward serving
the patients and giving back.  He has already enjoyed  a prosperous
career and he is now "giving back" to his community in the ways in
which he do so most purposely...(dentistry!)

I spoke to him X-mas eve a.m. at his clinic and he had already seen 2
emergency cases.  ofr just opening (within the last 2 months), a lot of
people are already seeking care at his clinic.  :-) :-)

No, worse than that. Someone was including other people, including me,
