WHY do all UPPER partial dentures have to be so BIG

All the partial dentures I see for the upper mouth look like 1959
Lincolns. My problem with them is the big upper thing that hits the
roof of my mouth like this one:

Are there any partial dentures for the upper mouth like this one?

Have made a few of those.
Some patients tolerate them fairly well.
The major problem with this design is that it can flex,
which leads to periodontal stresses and eventual
pathology of the abutment teeth.

IMO an open palate with a posterior strap is a better design.

Have also made the anterior frame with 'loops' .
It's half partial and half denture.
the advantage is that you can construct a post-dam.

It's a wierd bird that one of my instructors
(retired USAF prosthodontist) taught me.

Have one that has been in service for over 15 yrs
without any problems. The key thing is that these are
very easy to reline or rebase and are very stable.
There has been no periodontal pathology on the remaining teeth.
(#'s 6 - 11)
Downside is that it covers the palate, and this seems to be
this particular dudes chief complaint.

I chose this example just because it looked similarly underdesigned as
the PL the OP linked to.  I agree a posterior strap would be better in
this case.

Seems that we are on the same page once again.

First off you have done a dis-service to all 1959 Lincolns.
(though I'm a '57 Caddy man myself)   8^]]

A Valplast "partial"  is a piss-poor substitute for what is
correctly called a Removable Partial Denture (RPD).
In fact it is a piss-poor substitute for a Transitional Denture.
(one that is designed for the eventual loss of more teeth;
i.e transitioning from a partial to full denture)

This is an example of a Cast Frame RPD.
The prosthetic teeth are denture teeth on a denture base.
Alas, this is for a lower.

Depending on the number and arrangement of the remaining teeth
the RPD cast framework can have many different designs.
However the design is limited by the aforementioned
'number and arrangement of the remaining teeth' and which
arch we are discussing (upper v. lower).

If you can post a picture of your very own RPD perhaps I can suggest
a design more suitable to your situation. E-mail is ok too.

Don't despair, all is not lost.

Actually, the seond partial denture is like a 1949 Edsel.
Basically its a lower so it will not fit the upper.

Edsel's did not exist until 1956 or 57. I was trying to say that the
upper partials I have tried felt like someone shoved a 1959 Lincoln :

Up my mouth. I hate that big part that hits the roof of the mouth and
makes it hard to chew and speak. I wish I could afford implants.

I feel for you.

I was in a position where my dentist recommended 2 partial plates, and
yet he told me outright that many people cannot tolerate them and that
it takes a big commitment to learn to get used to them, to speak with
them, and so on.

Knowing how I HATE any little thing different in my mouth, like when a
crown is made ever so slightly wrong, with something sticking out that
my tongue rubs against, I chose to go for implants even though I
cannot afford them. I just knew that partial plates would drive me
nuts.

I wonder if you might be able to get one or two implants at a dental
school (about $1-2k each) and then use those to bridge some other
teeth to...?

On the bright side, they say that if you try real hard and make a
commitment to the partial plate you CAN get used to it after 6 months
or so. If you've already got it you may as well try to get used to
it...

Good luck!

Thought about traveling to COSTA RICA to have implants, Lots of good
modern clinics down there. Worse for me was from 1996 to 1999 I paid a
dentist close to $20,000 to crown all my teeth, he did not do the
uppers correctly and by 2001 problems were appearing , they told me
because more than a year had passed to drop dead. I complained to the
state dental board but there are no rules or regulations on how long a
dentist has to warranty his work.

I got a bridge for my lower teeth and loved it.  It did take a little time
to get used to esp. the metal clips to the teeth but I was a happy camper.
I am using past terms as my bridge broke and I haven't been able to get to
the dentist do to my crohn's flaring up badly which doesn't allow me to sit
in the chair long enough.  But it is hopefully in my near future to get my
dental work done and a new bridge in place along with getting my upper full
denture fitted again.  I am again in a bad flare that just started due to a
stricture, I got a partial blockage again.  I am really getting frustrated
about all this already.  Any ideas about how I can get to the dentist and
get the work done?  I have one tooth that needs major care and another that
has a small cavity coming up from under the gum line.  I do have absorption
issues and unfortunately it is hurting the teeth I have left.  Just for the
record, others on the crohn's site, two of them I go to, along with a friend
I have locally also have dental problems do to crohn's or UC.  Thanks for
any help.  UM MOM Susan
