Hi all,

I recently bought a bottle of g-bond, but as I'm not doing many
composites it's mostly wasted. I've begun thinking of using it to seal
my amalgam preps before placement of the "dreaded mercury stuff". It's
been months since I last used dycal or another liner or base, cause I
stopped believing in them (it takes time for the dental school
brainwash to wash off), and I was mostly putting gluma under my
amalgams.
I don't think the manufacturer even mentioning amalgam in the
instructions, but I'm not looking for it to bond to amalgam, just to
seal the tubules so that I won't get any sensitivity (hopefully).
Sounds good to you? If not, which self-etch BA do YOU use with amalgam
(it's got to be self-etch because I don't want to wait for years).

Cheers,
George

have you hear about resin based adhesive systems? It`s outrageus the
ignorance about dentino pulpar protection in this forum.

If you mean something like amalgambond or relyx, sorry I can't afford
it. What exactly do you mean dentino pulpal protection? Last I heard,
american faculties were teaching their students to line amalgams with
allbond. Bases were limited only in cases where support was deemed
crucial.

If the proposed amalgam restoration requires a base for support,
it is my position that the tooth in question should have a crown.

It's always nice to see arrogant pot shots.  Maybe you would like
to share some of your infinite wisdom.

Dycal is not a good pulp protector if you have a stress pulp it can't
take tu irreversible pulpitis, use glass ionomer like base and sobe tube
sealer like single bond or any adhsive
George Chatzipetros - 09 Dec 2005 16:41 GMT
I don't like dycal as well and I only use it occassionally for direct
pulp caps. Sealing would be the number 1 priority under any restoration
IMHO. Out of curiosity, why do you do the GI base if you've already
sealed? Is it something you do in every case, or only when you want to
get mechanical support?

I use GI to protect the pulp if we are going to use amalgam you must
protect the pulp from electric, termal and mecanic action. If you have a
good reamin of dentin you dont need to use a GI only a tube sealer

Exactly my thoughts, thanks. I recently read the restorative handbook
distributed to students in the Washington dental school. It says that
bases are to be used only for mechanical support as the current
thinking is that they don't provide valuable insulation, and they seal
the dentin with allbond to provide insulation. Sounds right to me, like
the saying "amalgam on a thick base is like a sheet of glass over a
trampoline".

And, amalgam over a thin base is like a sheet of glass over a piece of
carpet padding.

Liked the trampoline metaphor much better.
It makes for a much more lively mental image.

BTW sis, can you believe it ? Whamatus on SMD on a Sat. ?
It's too cold here in Crested Butte to play outside right now.

I do not deserve credit for the trampoline metaphor, but I forgot who
said it.

But, they need to realize that even a thin base will fox some.

Amazing. I saw on the TV how cold it was in Arizona  , I don't know
how  you take it.

Now, when I hear "Arizona", the image coming to my mind is that of a
staggering, thirsty cowboy in a desert with vultures circling above
him. I could never think of it as cold. Watched too many bad westerns?
Amatus Cremona - 12 Dec 2005 19:32 GMT
That would be George W_B alright.  With his cowboy boots, ten gallon hat and
his spurs a jingling as he walks.  He is the only person I know of who
dresses that way in Rhode Island.

Fox some ? That must be technical talk. <hehe>

It's rough, but someone has to do it.
