Hi Everyone,
I've been reading this group, and am grateful for everyone's
willingness to offer time and advice.
I had an emergency root canal on 11/17. I went from no pain to serious
pain in a couple days, and although there was no physical evidence from
the xrays, the doctor was pretty sure I needed the canal. I was very
sensitive to air, and breathing in hard caused lots of pain.
Unfortunately, i was away on business at the time, and had to find a
dentist who could see me immediately in the city I was visiting. The
canal seemed to go well, and they put in a "build up" inside the tooth
to hold me over until I can get a permanent crown. (Charged me $1000 -
is this nuts? I didn't have much of a choice). Since I was leaving town
shortly, this wasn't an option at the dentist who did the canal.
Here's my question- I made an appointment for 12/19 to be seen by a
local dentist for a crown. Is this too long to wait? I don't have any
pain, but have read that my tooth might fracture. Am I waiting too long
for the crown?
Also, what type of crown is strongest?
Thanks SO much for your help.
Best,
Josh

I like to remove the build-up and make one piece of solid porcelain to
extend 10-12 mm into the tooth. This is a better mimic of tooth structure
than gold is.

Usually you can wait 2-3 months, but I have seen teeth crack sooner. I
think that if the tooth cracks in half in the first 3 months, it was already
cracked so bad that it would not have been worth restoring anyway.

For a molar RCT and build-up, it is cheap. Sorry, but inflation hits
dentistry as well as the Farmers near here in Richmond, Virginia.

The fee for a root canal and buildup is a normal fee in many areas of
the country.
Any crown will hold up to normal chewing. Ceramic or resin or
ceramo-metal can crack in patients who grind, or chew on pens, pencils,
chicken bones, ice cubes, blasting caps--you get the picture. For back
teeth in patients with habits, I still think gold is best.
I will generally reduce the height of teeth that have had root
canal--both to decrease the chance of postop sensitivity to biting
pressure and to decrease chance of fracture. With reasonable care a
month or two wait shouldn't be a problem.

And I'm a little guy. Dartos can get away with far more than I can on
that count.

Maybe, but I'm getting older and some of those young punks think
they can whip anything. Some of 'em don't even need any booze
to think that way.
I may need to keep an 'equalizer' around some day.

'Way out there in Two Sticks In Mud, Wyomazona, where you are, that
would be a good idea.
