I am in the process of having a root canal done on a molar. I went t
a regular dentist who does root canals but after two courses o
Zithromax, the infection has not gone away. He said something abou
my having very narrow canals and said I should see an endodontist
who is going to charge me the full amount for a root canal. I'v
already paid the dentist for a root canal plus post. Now I am stuc
with payng for the same root canal twice. Are dentists allowed t
charge for a job that is not completed? Obviously he's taken o
something he is not competent to do. I can cook dinner for a party a
home but if I say I can do a banquet for 400 and it turns out tha
it's too much for me to handle, I certainly can't charge for it

Should my money be given back to me

No way to tell in your case.  Obviously the post will still be set by your
GP, so that portion stays as it is (specialists do NOT place posts).  Your
GP should be paid at least part of the fee for the time put in so far.  Full
fee--I doubt it.  It is not his fault that you grew tough roots to treat.
Odds are likely that your tooth cannot be treated, and he is simply giving
your tooth one more chance at the endodontist's office before giving up and
extracting it.  Then, again, sitting here in Northern Maine, I have no idea
if that really applies to your tooth or not.

IMO if the GP tried to start the RCT but couldn't complete the
treatment, they are entitiled to an "open & medicate" fee and
that's about it.

JMO, YMMV

If the GP filled all but one canal, otherwise a fee to remove caries and
extirpate is appropriate in my book.

In my opinion, yes... or at least part of it.

Remember the endodontist charges more than the GP.

IMO, the general dentist should not charge you for unsuccessfully
trying to do a root canal.  The specialist certainly is not going to
give you a pro rata fee.
The post is another story.  You may need a post after the specialist
completes treatment.
