Tooth Extraction (Bridge or Implant)

Hi everybody,

First time poster here.  This coming week I have to have one of my
upper back teeth extracted. They said it can't be saved.  They tried a
root canal, but only finished half of it.

I am kind of worried on what I have to go through. I have not had a
tooth extracted since my 4 wisdom teeth were taken out as a teenager.
They told me this procedure will be a lot easier. I certainly hope so.

I'm praying the novocaine makes me nice and numb.  I read on the
internet that I will only feel pressure.

I have to decide weather I should get a bridge or a tooth implant put
in.  Can anyone give me the pros and cons for each?  Since a tooth
implant will save the surrounding teeth, this sounds like the better
option. But don't they drill the tooth into your bone?  Plus, with a
bridge I won't be able to floss.

How can I save the rest of my teeth from coming out?  After this
nightmare started, I make sure I floss several times a day as well as
brush. Is there anything else I can do? I am middle aged.

Peace.

I did a Google on Dental Implant and this was one of the first sites
that came up. Have a look.

Brush and floss is the best medecine.

Of course that implant is the firt choice if you chose a brigde you must
destroy the crowns of the teeth next to the edentulus space. Of course
is more expensive and the treatement is longer.

Th brigde is cheaper and you CAN floss there is a special floss
"superfloss" of oral-b

To answer a small part of your query.  I just had a tooth extracted that my
partial connected to.  The dentist offered implants and said that the
implant on the bottom was much sturdier and had a better chance of success.
(4 teeth = $12,000).

After this procedure I took 7 days of Clindamycin and developed an all-over
body rash from it.  I'm into my fourth day of it.  I went to ER and they
said nothing can be done except Benadryl.  I'm  wondering  how long this
will last.

Good luck with making the correct decision for yourself.  I can see that you
are concerned.

I hope you stopped the Clindamycine.

Same thing happened to me this past Summer.  Rash lasted almost a week.
Physician put me on Prednisone which caused a different set of problems.

I have another dental coming up next week.  I'm not sure what I'm going to
do about taking antibiotics again.  Really is freaking me.
I've heard about prednisone causing problems.  Have you done any antibiotics
again yet?

I have not needed to.

You probably do not need to do so again either.

I wonder why you say that.  My f-i-l takes them everytime he has dental work
done.

Your Father in law probably has a heart valve defect.  Your case sounded
like you were asked to take the AB after an extraction to help healing .

I understand you now.  I must've posted in another subject that I had
cellulitis after dental work around the 2nd of November.  It was in my
breast where I had had cancer.  My breast surgeon said that it is documented
that dental work can bring about cellulitis and suggested that I take
antibiotics to prevent this in the future.  That's why I'm concerned about
taking antibiotics again -- looks like it's a choice of cellulitis of the
breast (and this is not insignificant) or a horrible rash from the
antibiotics.
Thanks again, Amatus.

If you have previously had a rash from an antibiotic, YOU CANNOT TAKE THAT
PARTICULAR DRUG EVER AGAIN. !  You could die if you take the same drug
again.  Make sure all you health care providers are aware of the allergy and
you are switched to a different antibiotic.

Thank you very much, Amatus, for your advice.  I won't take it.  And I'll
find out what the similar drugs are to Clindamycin.  I am allergic to
penicillin is the reason they gave me Clindamycin.  I'm hoping I won't run
out of types of antibiotics to take.  There are probably several.
My appreciation,
Dee

In addition to the boilerplate relative merits of implant vs. fixed
bridge, consider the amount of bone in the area of the extraction, and
the proximity of the sinus.  Patients with a history of chronic sinus
disease should understand the risks if the sinus must be raised and
grafted in order to place an implant fixture.
The condition of the teeth adjacent to the extracted tooth must also be
considered in determining whether a fixed bridge is advisable.
