Yes this can sometimes happen especially when apical patency is performed.
The antibiotics should help mop up some of the bugs that were pushed past
the apex.
Did you get any pain killers prescribed?
Also did you have an abscess in that area prior to RCT?
It also is painful when the side of the tooth is tapped, and

Yes canines have long roots.

As I said, it sometimes happenens. Also was the RCT done in 2 stages or one
stage?
If a patient comes to me with pain which is due to pulpal involvement, and
the tooth wants to be saved, then I remove all the decay and place Ledermix
after extirpating the pulp and irrigating with clorohexadine or hypoclorite.
I then book an appointment within the month for the completion of RCT.
All my patients get relief within 24-36 hours after the first stage, which
makes the less stage so much easier as they are less on edge.
Give it some more time. Is the amoxycillin for 5 days?
A lot of the time the pulp chamber will be quite hyperaemic (hardly
surprising), and I pl

When I initially visited my dentist, the pain in the upper right part
of my mouth was very severe and occured when exposed to anything hot or
cold, even cold air when breathing caused pain. I had previously had an
amalgam filling to the tooth to the right of the canine, and presumed
it was that causing the problem. At that stage the pain affected every
tooth on the upper right hand side including the right hand side
inciser.
The dentist said that there didn't appear to be any problem with the
filling, and said that I had probably been grinding my teeth during the
night which has caused inflammation. He prescribed 500mg Amoxycillan,
and told me to take anti inflammitary pain killers and to come back in
a weeks time.
The following week that pain had eased significantly, and I was able to
identify that it was localised to the canine tooth. I went back to the
dentist and explained this. He had a look at it and tapped the bottom
of it, this was very painful and he told me that he would make another
appointment and take the nerve out.(Which I presume meant a root canal)
I was unable to get another appointment until 6 weeks later, so I
continued to take painkillers in the meantime.
The entire procedure was completed in one go last Thursday afternoon,
and I am now experiencing the pain described previously. I was again
prescribed five days of Amoxycillan (20 500mg tablets) I was not
prescribed any painkillers, although he did tell me that it might be
painful for 24 hours.
I still have nearly 3 days of the anti-biotics to take, and have been
taking paracetamol for the pain, which is just as bad as the pain I was
experiencing prior to the procedure. Although the location of the pain
has moved.
I was not expecting this level of pain, as I was under the impression
that once the nerve was gone there would be no pain at all.
I would just like some reassurance that this pain following a root
canal of this type is normal as I am going on holiday in 10 days and
will be 3000 miles away from home.

Where abouts are you from?
There may be a number of reasons why you may still be getting pain.
Some include
more than 1 root canal in the canine
periapical infection - the antibiotics and your immune system should take
care of that. You arnt diabetic are you or have problems with your immune
system?
Inadequate debridement of the root canal / residual caries left in.
Did the dentist use a rubber dam ( this big green latex thing that pretty
much covered your face?
Val - 20 Nov 2005 13:01 GMT
I am in the UK, and will be on holiday in Florida in 10 days time. (I
really don't want any pain there, although I understand my holiday
insurance covers me for dental.)
I am not diabetic or have a problem with my immune system, as far as I
am aware.
I was under sedation when the procedure was done, so I don't know
whether a rubber dam was used.

I doubt very much whether your insurance will cover you for
pre-existing conditions and they will argue that this is one such. So
don't rely on it.

Are you a phobic patient?
If you are near sheffield I might be able to take a look...
Val - 20 Nov 2005 14:04 GMT
Yes, unfortunately I am a very phobic patient, but am nowhere near
Sheffield, I am in Cornwall.
Am I just expecting too much too soon? Am I just being soft?
My husband take Voltarol 50mg anti-inflammitaries. Would taking some of
those for a few days help or cause any problems?
I must admit, that whilst looking for information on the Internet as to
whether I should have pain following a root canal, I came across
several website, with horror stories about root canal's which have
scared me. I am now worried about infections eating into my sinus's,
and other terrible things.
I do know that the dentist took and X-ray of the tooth before I was
sedated, and I remember him taking another one after he had finished.

Voltarol is very powerful.
dont beleive everything you read...
See how things go, sounds like it may take slightly longer to settle down.
If things dont then you will need to see him again.

Thank you for your reassurance and time.
I think I probably scared myself by reading the horror stories, more
than I realised.
I will finish the anti-biotics and see what happens.
Thanks again

At that point, you could spend an extra 15 minutes and finish the RCT for
the patient. Pain relief is the same.
