Just have to vent somewhere -
I made the mistake of paying dentist in full, dentist submitted claim
to Cigna, my insurer, and after a lot of foot dragging and sending
notices that more info was needed ( dentist says sent it to Cigna three
times) PLUS I called them and specifically asked them to note my
account that payment should be made to me. Finally,Cigna sent the
check.... to the dentist, who then took his time writing me a check, of
course. We're talking in the thousands here, and about three months
time--otherwise I'd overlook the whole incident.
Is it worth my time to write and beef to Cigna, or just shut up and
remember never to pay in full again?

Cigna doesn't care if you beef. If you work for a big company with a
big contract, having your benefits manager beef is better.

Come to think of it, my company queries insurers' services annually -
I'll be sure not to ignore THAT questionnaire.

It can be very difficult to get insurance carriers to send out checks.
However, I doubt it was thousands, as very,, very few policies allow more
than $1500/year in benefits. Your dental office may have a policy of
waiting a week or two before writing the check. Most banks now will put
hold on any check issued from a another bank outside of the State you are
in. That means the dental office cannot touch the money for 3-5 days after
they deposit it.

They sent it out all right -- but not to me, who had paid the dentist
in full..>

Sorry, I misled. The total work was in the thousands, the benefit in
the high hundreds. But enough to keep me chipping away at the problem.

While I sympathize with your plight, now you see what dental
offices deal with on a daily basis. *Most* companies send
checks to individuals faster than to dentists, but obviously
that is not always true.
For the dental office, refiling claims and sending more documentation
just increases overhead and drives the price of dental care up even
more.

Take a walk in the park, take a nap, go see a movie...just don't waste your
time complaining. If they cared you probably wouldn't have had to put in so
much effort and time to try and get this resolved.
I had an insurance company (I won't mention names...but would like to take
this time to say my favorite baseball team is the METs) that paid me for
work I never did on a patient I never treated. It was a check for over
$2000. I returned it at least 5 times...and each time the company simply
re-issued the check. They won't pay when they should, and when they pay when
they shouldn't you can't get that fixed easily either.

With me they take the check back, then bill me asking to refund the
money for the erroneous check, and make me prove that I mailed it back
to them.

What a headache. I had another case where one company somehow changed my
name to John Farmer...had my TIN...but wrong name. It was my patient, and
work I had done...just the name was wrong. I called, would get someone who
"completely understood" and would then get re-issued check made out to John
Farmer again. Finally I just buried it in with some other checks and
deposited it...cleared fine, even though my name is no where close to John
Farmer. Anyone want to start a thread about how sloppy banks are??

There's the old story of the guy who paid his phone bill with a check

Sounds like a Beatles song: "Michelle, Ma Bell . . . ."

I had a DA working for me who paid her mortgage payment on time, but,
someone in California cashed the check into a personal account. The
canceled check had the name of the bank crossed out and the other person's
name written in. They used a different color ink and used cursive (the
check was made out with hand printing). The bank in California went ahead
and cashed it for this person. The DA had to fight with her mortgage
company for two months to get it straightened out. Turned out the person
who cashed the check worked at the mortgage company.

And then there was the time my mortgage payment somehow ended
up in the state child-support division. Got a letter asking for a case number.
Had to write back stating the fact that I had no case number, and that
they were in error. Then stated something to the effect that they had
10 working days to refund my money. They did, and surprisingly
within 10 working days.
Sometimes you have to write like an attorney.
