Can I wait for the crown?

The side (inside part) chipped off the second lower molar of a tooth with a
large filling. My dentist took a look and said there is no sign of decay
getting in and I should make an appointment for the crown. The problem is
he's going on vacation and I have to wait 4 weeks for the 1 1/2 hour visit
allowed for this procedure. I don't have any pain and the tooth is not
causing me any problem, so do you think waiting 4 weeks is all right or
should I go to another dentist?

In a situation like this you are playing the averages.  After the tooth
cracks, there is an increased chance the filling may fall out.  But it
may well not, if you're reasonably careful--no chewing on pens, pencils,
chicken bones, ice cubes--things you shouldn't be doing anyway.
If you're happy with your dentist and can be reasonably careful, I
thing 4 weeks probably won't be a problem.

I agree.

Waiting shouldn't be a big issue, but I usually bond some composite
(after a little air abrasion) onto the tooth for patient comfort.

Right, esp. in this area, where a fracture will frequently cause tongue
irritation.  I use (gasp!) Ketac-fill (glass ionomer).

Just me, but I never let anyone wait that long unless they can only come it
at 6:15 pm on a Tuesday afternoon/evening.  Then, they have to wait for that
one time slot to open up.  I have always left a few slots open in the book
in each week to deal with emergencies and urgencies.  If none occur, you
just book someone else into the slot at the last minute.

4 weeks should be no problem.
How long have you been going to him ?

About two years. The tooth in question is not causing any tongue
irritation. I was mainly concerned if there was any particular reason to
have it done sooner, but thanks to all who replied, my anxiety is relieved.
