Does anyone have any insight about those Dental Cooperatives (e.g.,
www.dentalsave.com )?  I assume there are "gotchas" to watch out for. Thanks
for any tips.

It is a discount plan just like Ameriplan.  You will be subject to heavy
bait-and-switch tactics.  Look at past discussions on this forum regarding
Ameriplan.

They shut down. The reason is that members are supposed to contribute
two hours per week and the guy assigned to drill was an auto mechanic
in his regular job.
