I have a question about this community group?

Thread rating: |
jessee - 31 Oct 2005 22:25 GMT I am a college student. I was assigned a project for my English class about community groups. I was to join a group that had to do with my major or my future career. I am studying to be a pediatric dentist. I was hoping this group would be a little bit more involved in anwering questions about those interested in the career of dentistry not the bashing of it. My question basically is- Is there anyone on this board that could answer questions about the career of dentistry or at least point in the right direction as to how to find a group that does answer questions I am interested in? Thank you!

Sue - 01 Nov 2005 17:23 GMT Jessee,
You may find some dentists on: www.dentaltown.com that will help you.
Dentaltown is set up for dental professionals only. As a dental student they will likely be very receptive to your questions there.
Good luck, Sue (non dentist)

It was very helpful. To those who looked at my post and only saw negative thoughts, I am sorry. I did not mean to come off sounding like I hated this community group. However, I did not feel that the group was answering the questions that it was supposed to. I was just trying to change the atmosphere a bit. My teacher advised to ask questions and hopefully influence the group we joined. However, how do you not expect me not to find this group negative when all I read is about dentist horror stories.
Amatus Cremona - 01 Nov 2005 21:19 GMT > My teacher advised to ask questions and hopefully influence the group > we joined. However, how do you not expect me not to find this group > negative when all I read is about dentist horror stories. Jessee,
This NG merely follows the tone of any conversation being had at the given time. There are a few intervals (you should be able to recognize them right away), whose sole mission in life is to harass others. They resort to name calling and accusations because they really are arguing a pint that even they themselves know to be false. However, they are excited by watching other get all worked up over those topics. Simply filter the trolls, and you will find the temperament here to be completely different.
Please feel free to ask sincere questions, and you will find lots of sincere replies (plus a few weird ones from the resident trolls).
Hint: don't ask about safety of dental amalgam or fluoride use. Don't ask about NICO. Pretty much everything else is open territory.
Please ask about minor scales with accidentals played in various time signatures.

In what way are your readers supposed to be influenced by your posts to a "community group"? (This is a usenet group; don't know what a "community group" is.)

Reply. Well actaully I did not know if I was accepted into this usenet group yet so I was leaving myself out of it.
Just kididng. Obviosuly a fruitcake. But I forgot to add that some of the dentists are grumps too. And everyone here is a dumbass.
Umm... that is meant with affection. **********************************************
Perhaps (ooooooh I know that gets Lolli mad when I use that word....)
Anyway, PERHAPS this well-intentioned student, Jessee will realize that most of us have a sense of humor about ourselves and about life in general (through the good and bad times). Some do not. That is life.
On a serious note, my guess is that peds dentistry can be a very rewarding profession, but also "trying" at times. Maintaining a sense of humor will be very helpful at times, IMHO.
-Sue PS There is a peds dentist on DT named gman pedo .. something like that. He seems like a pretty good guy.. so maybe Jessee can get something out of there.
There is a whole section named Pediatric Dentistry over there. There is also a whole section named Dental Students.
I am not trying to chase anyone out. If Jessee finds what s/he is looking for here, GREAT! It just seems like most folks took offense right away, so I offerred an alternative.
Sue - 02 Nov 2005 16:04 GMT I must revise my last comment. It seemed like noone was responding to Jessee, so I offerred an alternative.

I'm not certain that the point of the assignment in an English class was so much about getting career information from the "community group" as much as it might be about using language skills in a high-tech communication system as a means of gaining insight about "something" (in this case, an education/career option).
From personal experience, I can tell you that I spent a fair amount of time exploring the idea of communicating in the usenet (public) environment. If the exercise's purpose is to "communicate", "jessee" can ask me for some comments from *my* perspective. But I'm thinking our "college student" has left the stadium. ;-)

BTW, we took Stradavari downtown to see a dress rehearsal of La Boheme last night. He got very tired during the second act, so we left at the second intermission. Of course, the wine and cheese reception was closed after the first intermission, so he knew the food was gone. I don't know if he liked the music or the food better (probably the food). Seeing the dress rehearsal has us really excited for opening night this weekend. I have to decide between the Gray cummerbund and the black one.
We are hosting a "themed" dinner tomorrow night. The periodontist guest will have a fish wrapped in a newspaper on his place setting. Looking for a miniature horse's head to put out with dessert. I'll be projecting the video on the living room wall. I suspect I may get tricked into playing the theme music for that event as well. :-)

I think I will score it for Strings, brass (with one coronet), woodwinds (with contra-bassoon), tympani, gong, castanets, snare drum, bass drum, marimba, harp, and forte piano. I am counting on JmE to get the gong. Wonder if I should add acoustic guitar ?

I don't know. Does eating a psychopath make one a psychopath? Hmmm.. I think it does. Therefore maybe you ARE what you eat.
Actually this is truth (serious): I htink my mom is the only one in the world that knew how to make fruitcake that actually tasted good.

In a completely unmoderated, fully public newsgroup it is impossible to exclude some problem personalities and weird beliefs. You have to wade through a little sewage to find the meaningful posts.
Also, most people who have a wonderful relationship with their dentist and are not having any tooth problems are unlikely to be motivated to seek out a dental newsgroup. Complaints are going to outweigh positive comments by a long shot with the lay portion of this forum.
If that isn't to your liking, find a moderated group (I think the Internet Dental Forum allows students on free).
If you have any specific questions, fire away.

Jesse, This is an *internet newsgroup*, not a *community group*. Perhaps your English teacher wants you to go out and meet "real people"(no offense to any posters here;) having to do with your future career.
I would get the teachers approval before using the internet as a *community group* for your English class. You might get some relevant, tough info here - bashing included- but I doubt it qualifies as *community* for your assignment.

Are the "people" behind the posts in "community groups" more real than they are here? Perhaps the teacher (English or otherwise) needs to join the group to get some experience with usenet newsgroups.
Personally, I'm unclear why a person would expect to influence a "group" when the person is asking for career choice insight. ... I'm just plain confused by the assignment and it's purpose.

I was to join a group that had to do with [quoted text clipped - 19 lines] >Are the "people" behind the posts in "community groups" more real than >they are here? Depends on the definition of "real". In a way, this is more "real", more honest, more tough. The bashing is reality as are malpractice lawsuits, addiction rehab provided by state dental boards, high overhead costs, HIPPAA laws, amalgam controversy, employee embezzling, etc just to name a few. You don't really know all that going in.. these are the realities people find out about, later. The newsgroup is *less real because its exists in cyer space, not in physical reality.
>Perhaps the teacher (English or otherwise) needs to join >the group to get some experience with usenet newsgroups. > >Personally, I'm unclear why a person would expect to influence a "group" >when the person is asking for career choice insight. I did not read that. Sometimes I don't get all the posts in order. I must have missed that one, so far.
>... I'm just plain >confused by the assignment and it's purpose. Yes, I don't really know the purpose of the assigment. So they can meet people, learn about their chosen career, and write about, I suppose. Influence?, I dunno. The word community seems like it means non-cyber but I could be mistaken. The newsgroup can be useful for him whether it qualifies for his assignment or not.

The original poster began the discussion by designing a subject line. It began like this:
Subject: I have a question about this community group?
As far as I understand, the subject line tells me that the poster understood sci.med.dentistry to be a "community group". Usenet exists in cyberspace as a electronic discussion between posters.
I must confuse easily. As a matter of fact, I think I do confuse easily ... because I am definitely confused.

This leads me to believe he is to get out and meet real people.. the use of the word "community" as opposed to "research", but I could be mistaken.

Here's the post I was looking for... I replied to another that was not as specific as this one concerning the assigned project.
"jessee" posted with a subject line indicating an understanding that he/she was addressing a "community group" right here in cyberspace where cyber-beings get out and meet other real cyber-beings right here in sci.med.dentistry.
The end of this, TW
