Hi,
im a "young adult" (18). I have one of those cleft lip and pallete things, as a result, my speech is far from perfect. At the moment, im not too bothered about my apperance, but I am quite bothered about my speech. To direct family, I can talk "normally" and im understood. With my friends, I am usually understood, but with some difficultys. When you talk to new people, I am noticing I have to try and slow down my speech etc to be fully understood. On top of that, I apparently drop a lot of t's etc and dont round off my words properly.

I was just wondering, as im 18, is it too late to correct any of these speech problems, or is it too late for me?

Im in the united kingdom, if that helps (in terms of finding someone suitable / what to look for and where)

P.s. I remember as a young child having speech theoropy, but dont think i took it seriously, as was too young to understand what its for etc.

Thanks to anyone who replies :-)

Take Care,
Anon

It's never too late.  Ask your GP to refer you to a specialist for
evaluaton.

This is a link to an American site so the details won't be relevant
but the gist of it is still the same.

A hearing test might also be in order.

Good luck

Would the cleft lip and pallate thing be an obturator? If so does it go all the
way to the front? The acrylic in that area might be easily modified to help you
with your T's.

It should not be to late. If you can learn another language at that age you
should be able to modify your own.
