Dentinogenesis Imperfecta

I have Dentinogensis Imperfecta - which basically means the dentin in my
teeth is badly formed and weak.  My enamel is okay but once that breaks off
(which happens pretty easily), it's all downhill from there.  Right now I
have bonding on the front of all my remaining teeth (10 back teeth were
extracted).   My DMD has suggested crowning my remaining teeth w/PFM crowns,
as they're getting worn down now and we want to preserve my natural teeth as
long as possible (I'm only 26 years old).  My  question is this - crowns are
the standard treatment for DI, correct?  It's not very common so it's hard
for me to find information about it.  And, does having PFM crowns put on mean
that I'll have the dark line at my gums?  I have two PFM crowns now and they
don't have it, but I've heard some horror stories...my medical insurance is
paying for this bc it's a congential disease, so I want to make sure to do
the best possible treatment.

Thank so much.

Not congenital, but genetic.

This may be a dumb question, but don't both terms mean DI was
present/existing at birth?  I thought the terminology on the approval was
"congenital", but I could be wrong...?  Do you happen to know if crowns are
the recommended treatment?  TIA

Congenital means present at birth.
I doubt very much that your adult teeth were erupted at birth.

I would do crowns only as necessary, by definition the dentin is malformed.
Therefore, current dentin bonding may not be as good as in healthy dentin.

Take it slow and don't have all teeth crowned at once.

Just my opinion, YMMV.

The usual treatment is crowning of existing teeth.  I have not had a
case of DI myself, but a former classmate of my daughter's and her
mother both have dentinogenesis imperfecta.  The mother had all her
teeth crowned early, and IIRC it has been replaced once so far (in
Germany).  I'd say she is in her mid 40s.
It is usually (but not always) possible to avoid a line at the gumline.
As a practical matter unless you have a high lip line this isn't
usually a major problem.  If you do, your dentist can use all-ceramic
crowns or a porcelain shoulder/butt joint.  IOW, there are ways of
dealing with this.

Good luck,
Steve
