post-extraction infection questions

On 10-4-05 I had my back left wisdom tooth extracted and then a "bone
graft" which amounted to the o.s. packing the hole with bone material,
as I understand it.

My question is this:
How do I know if there is any infection or problems?

I went back to the oral surgeon one week later (3 days ago) and he
gave it a quick look (no x-rays), and proclaimed it had no infection,
that it was fine. I assume he was right, although I don't see how he
could tell that quickly.

But the tooth (or where the tooth was) still hurts a little, feels
like a mild toothache sometimes throughout the day, every day. I
particularly notice it after drinking anything cold or hot, and
sometimes after eating even though I try to avoid that area when
chewing. (I actually have no other teeth to chew with over there,
anyway.)

So my question is, how can I be sure there's no infection, and is it
normal for me to still feel this "toothache pain" (though mild), now
10 days after the extraction? Should I go back in for another check up
or is this normal? How long should I feel this mild toothache type
pain?

Yes its true. If a site is not healing properly it takes me 0.02
seconds to notice it.

Jim,

You had it check 3 days ago so maybe give it a little more time.  If it
the pain is gettng better then I wouldn't panic too much.

However if the pain increases at all, then I would definitely go back.

JMHO.

Thanks. Amazingly, it started feeling much better last night. There is
still some very minor pain, but it does seem to be subsiding, so I
think - and hope - I am okay.

Thanks for the straightforward helpful replies.
