Is the 1800 dentist screening process very rigorous?

The web site says it is but doesn't have any details on what a dentist
has to do to qualify.

Also, it doesn't say whether the screening process varies by locale.

Ideas?

I believe the "rigorous screening" is making sure the check clears
before the name goes on the list of dentists they refer. I could be
wrong, however.

I doubt very much they have access to any information (other than what
the dentist tells them) that is not in the public record.
Once at a meeting I asked what they needed from me to get certified,
and they told me $1200/month.

Cue the sound of a nail being hit squarely on the head.

The screening process consists of:  Does the check paid, to get the
dentist's name listed, bounce ?

They check licensure with the relevant state dental board, but you can
just as easily do that yourself (for a list, see here:
http://www.dentalfearcentral.com/dentist_license.html ).

1-800-Dentist is essentially an advertising agency. As far as I know,
the dentists pay the agency about $1800 (a month) to advertise their
services, when someone from their ZIP code calls 1-800-Dentist.

a check for the monthly advertising fee is the screening process.
The dentists are financially screened.

My favourite is dentistry.com's "VIP Dentists" - "Dentistry.com is
proud to highlight select dentists worldwide for exceptional Internet
contributions to the art and science of dentistry" (the "exceptional
Internet contributions to the art of science of dentistry" consist of
having a dental office website and paying $50 a year to be featured,
last time I had a look...). Cheap (compared to 1-800-Dentist) and
cheerful ;-P
