OK, panic over. After several more brushes and numerous rinses with
mouthwash, the yellow has gone and the replacement crown is almost as
it was before.
I can't believe how yellow it was, but how come my other 'normal' teeth
didn't stain in the same way? There must be some strong colouring in
that rice - I'm never going near it again!

Temporaries are usually either polycarbonate or acrylic. The acrylic
really does pick up colors. Try to avoid dark colored fruit juices such
as grape or cranberry. Coffee seems to be less of a problem short-term.
Probably the turmeric gotcha! ;-)

While we are on the subject....
I have a permanent crown in one of my front teeth. Anything special
that I can do to avoid it getting discolored in a long run? Do I need
to avoid some fruit / artificial juices? How about coffee and alcohol?

Permanant crows seem a lot better. My first lasted 10-15 years and didn't
seem to change colour.

I agree. I've had my front crown for 14 years, and it's only in the
last few months that I've noticed a discoloration, which is why I'm
wearing a temporary one now while the new one is being made up (I'm the
original poster of the thread).

The porcelain of the permanent crown is essentially non-porous. It can
stain, but the stain will only be on the surface, and can be easily
cleaned off.
