Allergic Reaction to Dental Bonding material

I recently had 5 teeth reshaped using a composite dental bonding
material. Aprox 5 hours later I was covered in hives with intense
itching. My dentist has never heard of such a reaction. My mouth is
unaffected the allergy seems to have manifested mainly on my legs and
torso.
I have been put on anti histamines and steroid treatment for 4 days
and have been told if the reaction comes back I will have have to have
the bonding material removed. Luckily i My own teeth remain intact
underneath.
Has any one got any advice or experience of this condition>?
Thanks!

Doubtful!

Very doubtful from the standpoint of immunology.

Some types are made of fluoroorganic compounds and mixed with
fluoroborate as a catalyst (as patented). Fluorides and fluoro complex
compounds are known to cause pseudo-allergic type reactions (histamine
release etc.).

Yup Joel,

try google scholar or Pubmed using the keywords "fluoride histamine",
for example.

Hey, I'm one of those lucky ones who *is* allergic to the preservatives
used in some anesthesia. :(

Uncle Bens is ok tho... :)

Then stay away from Septodont's stuff...

What are the odds that this is a case of latex allergy in delayed
fashion?

Good thinking .... that is a great guess.

Joel

Those rubber molecules invoke plenty of allergic response ......

They bend too ..... so they are tricky to cough up.

Yup, I know. Latex or lunch, sulfites or stings... anaphylactic
reactions are no fun! I've always kept an EpiPen since that experience.

I have never heard of this.  I cannot discount it though.  You should
look carefully at what may have happened in the intervening 5
hours--foods, etc.
    Did the symptoms pass?
