Alright. I told carabelli, amatus and W_B that I would NOT Cross-post
their posts. However since none of you own the information here I am
gonot do the following.

I came across an old topic that I would like to discuss, but it is so
old that I cannot reply to it.  None of you guys are on it so I am
copying it.

I just want to let you know upfront so you do not have a hissy fit and
start attacking me about it.  OK?  Thanks -Sue

It is about the future of dentistry. Located below:

information?

Thanks for any input,

The problem with cross posting is that folks don't want to have their
words, or work, spread around DT or DC without their permission. If
somebody wants to read it, they're welcome to come here and read all
they want. Gotta respect that...

Try this: Hey Cobber, I remember this lovely picture of a cheerleader
that you posted on DC once upon a time. Mind posting it to Tiny Earl
for us?

Uh-Oh... Better go... Sue is reloading...
Sue - 24 Sep 2005 00:12 GMT
Well at least it is not published in a magazine and circulated to
50,000+
people in your profession... without asking your permission.

So you are telling me I should post the link instead.

Thanks Bill,
Sue

PS to Amtaus...Sorry I phrased my thoughts that way... but that is
the general attitude that seems to be perpetuated here.

When Rod Kurthy posted on Dcom, he was attacked by Sci med
folks.  Then I was accused of having some sort of personal relationship

with him.  I did not tell you guys to go away.

The question was honest but not intended to attach blame.

So the point is, we can all make mistakes when we write our posts

I should  have phrased it differently so as not to sound accusatory
toward everyone here... sorry.

Cool off and just realize it is Sue sticking her foot in her mouth.
I was asking in all honesty.  I just wanted to know what I need to do
in order to be accepted here.

I did not mean to upset you by letting out an honest question.
Shad and I are similar that way... WYSIWIG

What you see is what you get.  I hope you can give me
some more time... but I guarantee I will stick my foot in my
mouth again.  I JUST DO IT!   I do not mean to... but I always do.

It comes out in the wrong way.

Sorry,

-Sue

Better yet, ask them to post it themselves.
If they don't, leave it alone...

Bill,

This was posted in April 2000.
I do not think those guys are around
here any more.

That is why I was telling the others.  I
thought it would be better to be open about
it rather than sneaky.

I guess if I was Joel I would not even
ask, but I was trying to follow the Scimed

Reply.  Well I left the American Red Cross where I was earning
$11.00/hr to start at Medtronic at $8.00/hour.  I was thinking long
term happiness and fulfillment.. not $.

I have been with Medtronic for 19 years and have moved up several
times.  Even without my husband's contributions my net retirement is
over $1 million.

I think I have functioned just fine.  Thank you.

Now just get over the cross posting issues already.

You think it is not being done by others?

Well you must be pretty ZANY to think that what you post here is
private to your own little usenet group.

AND yes I know what I have said here has already been RSS fed to others
sites (by someone)...so get over this issue ... I am not worried about
my stuff being cross-posted because I know this is NOT PRIVATE!

Wake up and smell the coffee Amatus.  If you do not want others to hear
what you are saying here, then stay off the internet.

JOel,

Kirk just got back form his fishing trip and I showed him what Amatus
said.  He told me to ignore jerks like that and to continue to do what
I think is right.

He wishes I would just give up these dental aspirations online because
he hates it when I take comments like that to heart. HE hopes that I
give up and stick to offline projects for now and stick to community
efforts and my work at Medtronic.

It has been difficult on our relationship because I take everything so
seriously (the big picture stuff).  I also take direct ad hominens to
heart sometimes and that does neither of us any good (Kirk or I).

I got so frustrated on DT because nobody wanted to discuss larger
issues facing the dental industry. I was internalizing my frustration.
It was eating me up.  I also could not understand how dentists would be
so rude to someone volunteering her efforts toward a project that helps
to improve the image of dentists and also helps to get some families
dental care.

By the way Kirk (my husband and I) share the same email account so
anything I say can be monitored by him at any time he wishes.  JOel you
have been a perfect gentleman.  THANK YOU!  Kirk has little interest in
going through my emails though because he knows I handle the creeps
appropriately.

I am not sure how anyone is going to interpret what I just wrote.  I
guess I don't care anymore.

In life I just try to do the right thing.  If someone has a problem
with that, then too bad.  They can go eat cake!!!

Sue
PS I am not mad.  I am just feeling better and more grounded now that
Kirk is home :-) :-)
Joel M. Eichen - 25 Sep 2005 12:34 GMT

Carabelli,

The whole conversation is on Dcom. I will have to go look it up. It was
a humorous conversation.

I work in medical research for Medtronic, Inc.  I am happily married
and in a FAITHFUL,  loving relationship.

My interest in dentsitry stems from my volunteer work that I did with
the MDA (MN Dental Association)

I am not trash as AC seems to assume.

It just seems like nobody has a sense of humor here!

Gosh.  I guess I just thought we migth be able to kid around sometimes
too.

If you want to know more about me and my links to dentistry I will give
you the link on DT.

My husband is calling.  Gotta go,

The term cross-post means that the person who is posting is very
cross. They frequently claim that everyone else is lying although I

Usenet is the realm of the anonymous. For some reason, people throw
civility out the window since they believe they're protected by a
computer screen.

Reason and common sense quickly follow civility.

Amatus made me mad by calling me trash and
then telling me to go away... so I got a little mad back.

I sill don't understand what the big deal is about
cross-posting.  Nobody responded anyway to a
message that was posted in April
2000 by "toothpuller" on Sci med.

AS IF anyone is going  to try to figure out who
toothpuller is anyway...?

In any case, I prefer to not remain "cross" anymore.

If I cross-post again (i.e. ancient posts where author is not around)
I will use Joel's technique (NOT TELL!)

....or use Bill's technique:ask first (if author is present).

Hah, you ought to ask Prosser about my last ribs episode.  Used the
water-smoker and the waterpan developed a leak that we missed.  Solid carbon
after about 6 hours.  They shattered when I dropped on on the sidewalk.  I
did offer them to my daughter and friends later that night as leftovers -
they were pretty excited - for about a minute.  Jackstack to the rescue.

Gee, would it be so hard to just begin a new conversation about the topic if
someone is so interested in it, rather than pasting the words of some

Why do you have to copy the conversation?

Those were great days, not sure why Bob wasn't into it, but everyone has a

Yes.... maybe it doesn't go well in Mtl for him, I don't know. But that

Amatus.  I used to play violin.  I used to love it!  I no longer play.

My younger brother can play piano like  you play violin.  He can sit
down and play without having any music in front of him. His true
instrument is alto sax though.

I am not naturally talented like he is...nor like my sisters who play
instruments still...

or like one niece who plays viloin, cello, viola, flute and piano... .
and sings too!! (This is of her own doing... not pushed on her by
parents).  In fact they were worried about her obsession.

But she simply loves music... that is all there is to it.

I wish I was gifted like that. Music is a wonderful thing.

Aside, I was coached to play violin because I have long fingers...  it
was either that or flute...

But I really did not want to clean up any spit....

Truly, that is all I knew.. the flute collected spit and at some point
you had to clean it up...

Sorry to sound so gross.. but that is the truth re: my 3rd grade
mentality and why I chose violin...

And yes.  Children can be  cruel but mostly they are just plain naive
and a little shortsighted.   :-)

My problem is not finger length, but width of the pads on the tips of my
fingers.  My fingers are wide enough that I have to move one finger to play
the next half-step.  I cannot play a half-step without moving a finger.  At
my level of playing, I need to keep as many fingers down as I can to
maintain finger position and tonality.  Move your hand 1/4 inch and you lose
tone.  I am just getting to where I can drop into third position and have
god tone.  That probably means she will push me to learn 5th position before
too long.  I never seem to get a chance to rest with this thing.

Dental connection:  finger and hind size related to doing dentistry.  Is
there a correlation?

You have to love the blind luck of having your spell checker accept a
mis-spelled word that is actually another word.

For those interested, _hind_ size probably does not matter, discussing it
might necessitate moving to a different NG.  I meant to say _hand_ size.

Except for certain procedures where the fingers have to be directly in
the mouth (say, using a hand instrument in endo, anyone who still uses
TMS pins), I doubt it would be a major issue except in extreme cases.
I didn't realize that string players could move up a half-step without
moving fingers--something we don't usually have to worry about.
Besides the frets, the scale length obviously affects that.  I've often
wondered how string players can develop that accuracy of finger
placement.  And my guess is you guys don't have white dots on the side
of the neck! ;-)

LOL... I had 2 white lines.  With the violin you must have "perfect"
tone... either that or you create a new musical wave as an
entertainer....kind of like Bob Dylan did.

Creating a good sound on the violin takes years of practice... even
without worrying about tone... it is so difficult to not sound
scratchy!  I wish I had kept it up.. because I never fully developed
the skill.  If I had just taken it in to college ...perhaps I could
have made it really sing.

RE: hind sight ...I mean hand size...

I would think that dentists need strong fingers and hands... Playing an
instrument would help develop that... so this seems like a natural fit.

There is a prominent cardiac surgeon in the Twin Cities who has
enormous hands... somehow he was still able to perform complex bypass
surgeries.. I think he is retired now.

Maybe robotics would help those professionals that may have some
practical problems created by size of hands, arthritis or what not  (in
dentistry and/or surgery)??

PS I misread Amatus.  Do you teach violin?
Dartos - 04 Oct 2005 17:06 GMT

I have fairly large hands, but my fingers are not 'fat'.  If the fingers
won't reach, or won't fit, the dentist just has to use an appropriate
instrument to help.

The strength issue would be interesting to test.  I remember years ago
at a family Christmas gathering where my brother (a truck driver at the
time) decided to test our grip strength by seeing how many pounds we
could register by squeezing a bathroom scale.

I beat him by 30+ pounds and he just couldn't understand it.

A neat test is to see who can hold that grip for the longest time.  I have
cured many "large" people of trying to squeeze hard enough to hurt during a
hand-shake by patiently waiting for them to tire a bit, then turning on the
squeeze from my end when they are starting to tire out.  Turns out we can
hold that grip for much longer as well.

Reply. What I do when I really want to hurt someone's hand when I shake
their hand,  I grip hard, crunch their fingers together and then roll
them until I hear them crack.

I tell how much it hurts by the grimace on their face...if I hold it
long enough they will crumple at the stomach...

At that point... I stop.

I used to do this to my younger brother every Sunday when we would
offer each other the sign of peace at church.....

HEY- It was pay back for the week-long torture that he gave me at
home...

You can move a half step without moving your hand.  You normally would play
F sharp, then just lay your next finger right next to the previous one for G
natural.  I can't do that, I have to pull the finger back that is on F sharp
other wise G natural comes out slightly sharp.  The higher the string, the
closer the spacing becomes.  Then, sliding to third position changes the
spacing again.  A full step on the E string in third position is almost a
half step on the G string in first position.  Fifth position shortens this
distance even more.

Some notes we can make by just rolling the finger to the adjacent string.
And, of course vibrato is achieved by vibrating the finger away from the
bridge then back into "normal" tone again.  You don't lift your finger off
the primary note in either instance.

No frets, no white dots.  Just muscle memory and listening for good tone.
You can tell when your ear is improving as you notice your finger adjusting
position slightly to improve tone as you bow the note.

In dentistry we get to use instruments which accommodate for larger fingers,
In music, we have to accommodate our bodies to fit the instrument.  The guy
on the saxophone can probably have huge finger pads and have great pitch
playing in the same manner as the person with tiny finger tips.  On the
violin strings, it is a different story.  Cello and bass players can set
fingers down for half steps easier, but they _really_ have to stretch to get
their fourth finger down while keeping the first finger in place.

Bad on me.  Somehow I saw moving a half-step without moving your
FINGER! ;-)
We don't have those kinds of space problems on the guitar.
I've played guitar on and off for over 35 years now.  But I have never
had a classical teacher.  It is self-evident to me how technique
sensitive getting a good tone out of a violin is.  It is not as
self-evident how tough it is getting a good tone out of a plucked guitar
string.  But believe me--when I listen to someone who can do it, I can
hear how far I still have to go.

You guys have a lot of notes to keep track of at one time.  I get the
occasional double stop, and the rare triple stop.  Usually, if I get a
triple stop it is at the end of a piece of music--the last note to be
played.  You on the other hand get to read four notes at a time for every
strum of your right hand (in many selections).  That is a lot of processing
going on between the eye, the brain and the hand.

is kind of like being a dentist.

If you'd read some of the more technical postings, especially those
where I post pics of my patients' mouths in the form of TinyPics, you
would have less doubt.

You know Sue, there is wisdom in LISTENING as well as talking.

Just my 2 cents.

SP,

I am not ignoring you..I just do not know you yet.
I am kinda shy at first... unless someone calls me TRASH
and tells me to GO AWAY.... (then I erupt)

or unless you are Dr Shad Lewis ...

Gaaaaawd... I picked on him right away (sorry Shad)

Your posts are hilarious  SP!

If I do not repsond, it is becuase I do not have continuous access
to the boards (on purpose).

If I did, I would beocme a complete addict (and that would not be good)

It is too easy to just sit around chatting instead of doing productive
stuff.

Have a great Sunday Stovepipe and et al,

Sincerely,
:-) Sue

You don't wanna know me.... believe me.

Better be careful: Amatus killed his violin professor 'cause one of his
strings snapped after his prof tuned it up... He eats steamed ice for
breakfast. 'Real tough dude. He even scares _me_.

Nope... Shad is American, IIRC, and I'm Kannnaaadian.

This worries me: some are wrote tongue in cheek, but not that many...

Yes. It is good that I don't have access at the clinique. If we ever
_do_ get a link up over there (to be able to do billings and send
consults, etc...) I'm gonna be in the same boat.

Tell me about it... I'm trying to write a payment and fees management
routine in MicroRats Excel for the Macintosh. We cannot afford  the
2000$ it'll cost to become compatible with the existing stuff, so I'm
trying to do it myself. It is not pleasant.
