Dentistry and the Internet

There seems to be competition between news groups and dentalboard
websites.

I do not understand this mentality. Shouldn't the focus be on
exchanging information ACROSS newsgroups when possible? ISn;t the
internet supposed to be free exchange of information?

I am not sure why dentists seem to want to limit themselves to one news
source only....

Any comments?

Respectfully,

Sue

I don't like redundancy. Copying from one to another does not serve any real
purpose. X posting to different groups makes sense on occasion. For example when
there is a group focused on a specific medical condition. That population group
has dental needs that might be affected by their condition and the dental
community needs to better understand those needs to deal with them efficiently.

Consider the real news as an example. I can watch it on TV or listen to the
radio. Catching both, I might get different viewpoints. The source skews the
topic. Quite frequently you will get a different perspective between the BBC,CBC
and CNN. Watching the news on television that is merely a rebroadcast of the
radio with no video is foolish, don't you think.

The source skews the topic. Quite frequently you will get a different
perspective between the BBC, CBC and CNN.

The same applies to dentistry.

Reply.  I agree.   I do not like redundancey either.  The reason I ask
is because a lot of people say that another dental website where i post
occasionally, is very biased in some of thier opinions.

Therefore I was hoping to get opinions from both sites on some of the
same issues.   I was cross posting a little.  I thought I was doing so
in a repsonsible manner, but now I understand that most people do NOT
appreciate that.

I should have asked if I could do that.  It didn't even cross my mind
that it might be a bad thing... SORRY.  I think I understand now.

It is a loss of control by the poster and a fear that someone may try
to use their words out of context to make a point that is not relaly
the point represented by the original poster. And the orginal poster is
not there to set it straight if there is misrepresentation.

I amazes me how dense some people can be.  Everyone complained about having
their messages crossed over into DC, but you think it is okay to cross them
into DT, despite the fact that most of the posters here told you we dislike
DT more than we did DC.

Are you sure you are not Joel?

Amatus,

OK.  I have been pretty nice to you so far.  But since you conitnue to
harrass me after I apologized.. here goes:

I was not listening to your petty little arguments that you have with
others outside of SCI med. I do not focus on that sort of PETTY CRAP.

I think about what is good for the larger picture..not someone else's
petty insecurities, especially when I know what I am doing is legal and
aids information exchange that can be helpful for more people than me,
you or your few friends here.

Now you have pointed out to me that you do not want us to cross-post.
I said FINE. I have apologized and WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN.  Now please
get the bug out of your arse.

Thanks. Let us move on.

And sometimes, Sue, the unsuspecting OP gets blasted by irate posters
who barrel-a.s in here like bulls in a china shop and just get pissed
off and piss people off because we don't cow-tow to them, like they do
on  their product-sponsored web site over there where the advertising
money keeps the thing going 'cause otherwise, it gets too expensive.

Typically crossposting is considered a doublecross or a crossover
unless it's crossposted by a crosseyed person on
alt.fashion.crossdressing... but that's their cross to bear.
Sue - 23 Sep 2005 18:52 GMT
Hey Bill ever hear of this?  Jerk (definition below)

I am working in collabroation with Peter Walsh, doing a study to
determine which dental board has the highest number of these.  He is
indirectly using the nerves in my head as a measure!

This study will be carried out at the physics and aeronautical labs out
in Philly.

The premise is: The number of jerks correlates precisely with  headache
pain.   At the same time the amount of amalgam in my mouth will be
accurately measured.

I am the first test subject.  We plan to get a minimum of 300 subjects.
THEN we can make a 3 vector plot: amalgam vs pain threshold vs number
of jerks.  From this we will be able to deduce the faradaic properties
of AMALGAM and whether there is a true clinical effect on nerve
activity in the head!

*********************************************************************

Def. Jerk

In physics, jerk (in British English, jolt), also called surge, is the
derivative of acceleration with respect to time (or the third
derivative of displacement). Yank is mass times jerk, or equivalently,
the derivative of force with respect to time. Jerk is a vector, and
there is no generally used term to describe its scalar value.

The units of jerk are metres per second cubed (m·s-3). There is no
universal agreement on the symbol for jerk, but j is commonly used.

Jerk is used at times in engineering, especially when building roller
coasters. Some fragile or precision objects can be safely subjected not
only to a maximum acceleration, but also to a maximum jerk.

Higher derivatives of velocity than jerk also exist, but they are
rarely necessary, and hence lack agreed names. Many suggestions have
been made, such as jilt, jouse and jolt.

Hey Bill,

I'm at the lab. We are in the middle of phase I of our expt. Does this
guy SP count as a true jerk or is he ok?  (He's just playing around
right???) Would he really do that to me if he could grab me through the

Our count is approximately 4 true jerks so far on DT
(names withheld of course)
0 true jerks on Dcom
0 true jerks on SMD

AND I need to gather ACCURATE scientific informaton.

So Input please,  Bill?

Joel,

No Joel.  I was not proposing a gateway. I was just having fun with
Bill. I was just making nonsense up.  That is how I vent.

I got hammered by some on DT again (a few days ago).  They have not
banned my newest ID yet though. Some of the people there are REALLY
against me.  I have never had a conversation with most of them, yet
they make very disgraceful accusations.  I have no idea why they think
I am some sort of evil person out to destroy their board.

Then why do you insist on going back?. Hell, they don't want most of the
dentists who can still think for themselves either.

(a) people may have been expelled from other groups
(b) people may not have the time to read more than one group
(c) people may choose a group based on the attitudes and ideologies of other
group members
(d) people like the sense of 'belonging' that goes with being a member of a
particular group
etc. etc.

IF the exchange were across all news groups/websites, there would be no
opportunity to form groups and alliances, and it would take too much time to
read through it all. Having said that, I did like the dentalcom.net gateway,
because I prefer the graphic interface.

I also prefer not to be quoted across groups, unless it's quite obvious that
they're interlinked (e. g. medkb or the dentalcom gateway). They're separate
entities with their own psychology.

I disagree with you about medkb and dentalcom, they are not newsgroups, nor
are they news servers.

Of course if Joel wants to fire up dentalcom again, whats to stop him?  I
can think of a BBQ master that might.

Hang on right there, please.

The idea of opening a gateway from DentalCom to SMD was mine. If it
caused anyone any real trouble, then I apologize for your
inconvenience. Justin, the fellow that runs DC was good hearted enough
to enable the add-on that tied DC to SMD, or any other NNTP feed for
that matter. Since this gateway was causing problems, the decision was
made by Justin to shut it down. In other words, the gateway was an
experiment and chances are you'll see more and more of them as time
passes.

With that said; don't count these "gateways" out. Public newsfeeds are
just that, public.
FWIW, I took the time to post this message from a Blackberry, via RSS,
tied to Google.
Sheesh! Who cares what avenue someone takes to get to SMD? Give it a
rest.

In fact, the blame can be shared three ways, Bill, Justin and me. To
tell you the truth I was very surprised at the reaction. I guess we
had some initial problems with dropping off what we are replying to
.... as DentalCom works a little different than it works here.

Second, there were a ton of new posters, not from DentalCom but from
somwhere. That gave us more bad press.

Third, Justin took it the wrong way. He is a very good guy and did not
deserve the flak. Now me? If someone dislikes me I can understand
that!

If there is no cross posting, and my own NEWSREADER (ascii code reader)
can read it, I don't see any problem. It _IS_ evident, however, that
there is at least _ONE_ forum admin out there who looks down on the SMD.

Those people, I do NOT want to see.
