To Veneer, or not to veneer?

Greetings, esteemed professionals!  I received two different opinions
from different dentists, and wondered if any of you might have some
insight...

Earlier this year I lost a center portion of my two front teeth.  The
roots were not damaged but almost 50% of one tooth was chipped off,
the other lost around 5%.

I went to an independent practitioner who did a very good job at
repairing the damage, but she told me I should get veneers or else I
would have to get the fillings repaired every couple of years.

Later I had a checkup with a dentist covered by my DMO, and he said
veneers were usually for cosmetic purposes, and if I didn't accidently
bite into carrots or other hard food with my front teeth the fillings
should last around ten years.

So which version is closer to the truth?

Both are guessing ......

As with all medical and dental procedures ........

What is with the carrots thing by the way?

> Later I had a checkup with a dentist covered by my DMO,

Remember that the DMO office loses money every time they see you, so their
incentive is to either never see you for treatment, or else to convince you
to have procedures done which are not covered under the plan.

Generally, bonded fillings which include the biting edge of front teeth,
will have a life-span of 2-10 years.  Some last a lot longer, but we always
warn the patient, that (depending on their habits) they might need to have
the filling "repaired" every 2-3 years.  We, also, tell them that lots of
these that we did over 20 years ago are still holding up.  It is not
predictable.  Veneers are simply more predictable.

The truth is that the current restorations will last as long as they last.
