This was PMed to Sue, Justin, and BillKatz ......
09/11/05
Huge misunderstanding ...
After almost one year, Google had still not indexed any of DentalCom's
conversations. This means that no one other than those who were
referred here could find us.
So all this time, here I was making up my own conversations, stealing
material from elsewhere and trying to make this look like it was a
discussion board. Sue was helpful in that she added to those
conversations. She played Devil's Advocate, supporter, whatever.
Justin, BillKatz, and I shared some extremely useful computer
discussions, plus a few others did post about dental topics.
So the gateway was the answer. But most unfortunately, right at the
same time a whole bunch of new people found sci.med.dentistry, but not
through us! I checked the origins of every post. They did not sign on
and post from DentalCom.
But a couple of the regulars at sci.med.dentistry figured we were the
culprits. And the lack of quoting properly confused others.
But basically they did not want more than the 10-50 posts a day that
are there now. Why they suddenly got more, a whole lot more, who
knows?
Falp did add fuel to the fire. Needlessly so.
I agree that reposting a photo, or a link to a photo on DentalTown's
server, (actually sent through DentalTown) is not copyright
infringement. If it goes to court the plaintiff will lose. The
plaintiff could also lose a SLAPP suit brought by the defendant.
That said, Justin was under fire. I understand that. Besides, Howard
Farran pays to publish and print 135,000 copies of that cheezy rag
DentalTwon Magazine. Plus there's mailing costs and postage.
So its not a free discussion forum, its a venue for attracting
advertisers, both good and awful. The target audience is not 53,000 as
claimed by Farran, its more like 200-300 regulars.
So there it is ......
I think I am posting this at sci.med.dentistry, that "OTHER WHITE MEAT
..... POSSUM" site!

I told you about Google at least 6 months ago, Joel.
So, are you saying that dentalcom will open up the gateway to SMD
again?

I do not think so. It was a huge headache for Justin with no upside
for him.
I am thinking as less and less people can locate usenet
nntp:sci.med.dentistry, the attendance at our meetings will dwindle.

consistent internet posters in any case. And the dental suppliers have
their own websites and blogs.
I wonder when all of those throw away paper dental magazines will bite
the dust?

Google and Yahoo! and the other search and archive sites are businesses.
Call me cylical, but I think the only way to accelerate things with them
would be with $$$$.
