About a week ago I went back to my Endodontist for a re-treatment of a
root canal that was performed on a bottom left molar. After the first
root canal everything was fine for about two months, then heat
sensitivity came, then it hurt to bite down on anything. It's one
week after the re-treatment and I feel constant pressure from the tooth
without biting down; it almost feels like an itch in the tooth.
What started all of this was a trip I made to my general dentist for a
regular cleaning. She said I needed an onlay on this tooth, which I
agreed to-even though it exhibited no pain. After that it's been
completely downhill: she originally tried half a dozen adjustments,
then a crown, then she called for a root canal, and now I just had the
re-treatment. I haven't been able to eat on that side of my mouth for
a little less than a year, and now I have this "itchy" feeling in
the tooth even when I'm not eating. I think the Endodontist thinks
I'm making it up-which I'm not: who really is a glutton for
Endodontist visits, anyway? Besides, I can't afford any more work to
my teeth right now, yet it's killing me. I fear he's going to tell
me I need an extraction. I've already spent about 1300.00, not to
mention the loss of work-time, on a tooth that never hurt from the
get-go. All of this has made me very frightful of going to the dentist
for anything. Can anyone give me some advice?
Thanks,
Gene Burrows

Can you post an x-ray so we can comment on it?

Hey Gene!
There is a radicular lesion (DEF. Of or pertaining to roots, or th
root of a plant) around one or more roots. It may heal or it ma
require apicoectomy. Apicoectomy is the surgical drilling through th
buccal plate of bone and the removal of the granulation tissue, plu
the small end of the root tip.

Hi Joel,
Unfortunately, I do not have a personal copy of the x-ray. But I can
tell you that when I went back in to the Endodontist and looked at
it--it showed a dark spot at the very bottom of the root. He told me
that this wasn't healing (ligament? is what I think he called it) and
that he needed to do the re-treatment: which was one week ago.
I called him yesterday afternoon and he said the itching feeling is
probably the tooth trying to heal.

That sounds reasonable to me. As the healing takes place, it would not be
unusual to have some sort of "feeling" going on. Hope things improve!

It's hard to diagnose without an x-ray and without an examination. Dental
care, like all health care, is often difficult as everyone is different and
there is no guarantee that any treatment will ALWAYS be successful.
Considering the time/money/effort you've expended on this, I would go back
to the endodontist and see what's what. You mentioned that the tooth was
re-treated, and that often will take care of it, but you did not say how
long ago that was, you only said "I just had the re-treatment." Depending
on how long it has been since that treatment, and considering that you have
had problems with the tooth for a long time, I would see what the
endodontist thinks. It might need an apicoectomy, or perhaps not, depending
on the situation. Call him/her and ask. Good luck.
