Howdy all. I saw this in some thread or other and I'd appreciate knowing
why people are reluctant to use tinyURL's. Is is a cookie problem or
what? If you don't click on a rogue site's links, I thought it wouldn't
affect you
Thanks

My reasons are that I don't like not knowing where I am going.
tinyurl.com/blahblahblah tells me nothing. So the bottomline for me is, I
won't click it without a clear explanation of what it is. The other day
there was one to take you to Microsoft.com, why not bracket some text
stating thats where it's going? I had no desire to go to microsoft, and no
desire to download that software.. this is another sneaky way to sneak in
spam.

You just want a clear statement telling you where the URL link will lead,
right Tim? You don't want to open your front door to any stranger.

Exactly Amatus. I don't care how long a URL is, at least it tells me
something about the domain I am about to visit. I am also smart enough to
know how to paste the entire URL into a new browser if it's broken in the
post.

Unfortunately, not everybody knows how. A simple and polite solution to
this issue is to simply give both URLs, the original (long one) and the tiny
one.

Or any door for that much :-)

Here is the advantage of tiny url.
Say I want to see the flight schedule at Philadelphia International
Airport or need to TELL someone over the phone where to find it.
SIMPLE.
I think of Tim Dixon!
YUP. Nine tim dixons.
That is my mnemonic for remembering,
www.tinyurl.com/9TDXN
which takes you to ,,,,,,,,,,
Well try it!

I agree that it is convenient.

Noiw you guys are going to BOOO-OOO me but there is one more step. I
want this appearing on a Blackberry, Treo 650, Nokia wireless, so's I
can check the flight's progress as I am driving to the airport to pick
up a passenger.
If the plane is late, I am stopping for coffee. Picking up passengers
is best accomplished at the ARRIVALS near the baggage carousels, not by
PARKING in the hugely overpriced, legislator-slush-fund, pay-to-play
corruption rip-off Philadelphia Parking authority lots.

I agree! Posting a "bare link" is bad netiquette. But that is a totally
separate issue from the tiny url. I will rarely click on a link without some
explanation of what it is, why I would want to go there, and what I should be
looking for when I go there. A snippet of copied text and a little blurb from
the OP should be the normal style.
In the future, I will post both the "tiny URL and the source (original,
long) URL.
